I'm an old 3.5 fan. Like many I was fairly burned out on the sheer volume of content and choice, although for me by 2007-2008 it was the heavy focus on the player base in the min/max game that killed it. As a DM I could only keep up with that kind of player so much. Switched to 4E, liked it but...

All that aside....I do fit into the "collector of the special edition covers" group and will probably buy this set....sigh.

If they weren't motivated to buy the single editions before, I am not sure why a collected and more expensive set would be motivating casual players to buy these books. Specialized covers with a new book in early release seems aimed very specifically at the collectors and the hardcore players...

I don't think anyone is confused about WotC being a business for profit first. It seems to me that the message here is asking businesses not to exploit our weaknesses as consumers. We appear to be very efficient consumers and easily manipulated, and a lot of people will buy the boxed set not...

I have culled from the collection periodically, but tried to stop doing it because I usually end up missing some of what I get rid of later on. Generally, when I have moved I try to slim the collection down, sometimes I look at the shelves and feel bad for all the books I don't have time for...
