RPG Crowdfunding News – Voltron, Evil Dead, Traveller, and more

I would have totally been down for a Year Zero Engine powered Evil Dead game. Heck, I could see a 5E powered ED game if it included Army of Darkness.....

GMing: What If We Say "Yes" To Everything?

Also a valid kind of game, but likewise of its own type. I wouldn't want to shoehorn D&D into such a mold when another game would suit the playstyle better.

    Pathfinder 2E Diabetic oracle?

As a type 2 diabetic with a type 1 son, the kind of diabetes makes a difference.....Type 1 prior to the invention of modern medicine and insulin was pretty much a death sentence, so assuming Type 2, I might suggest something that induces fatigue and negative effects tied to diet, rest and slower...

GMing: What If We Say "Yes" To Everything?

I've been mulling over your examples and this. Let's reframe the concept that there's a power dynamic/conflict between the players and the DM, and instead suggest that there's a storytelling dynamic in which we seek dramatic tension and uncertainty. In improv, they use the similar concept of...

Elon Musk Calls for Wizards of the Coast to "Burn in Hell" Over Making of Original D&D Passages

I will take that as sound advice. I knew more about Asimov because I avidly read his works, met him one on occasion and met more than a few people at cons in the 80's and 90's who had some very interesting stories to share about him when he was alive. I never read Bradley, so I guess that was...

Elon Musk Calls for Wizards of the Coast to "Burn in Hell" Over Making of Original D&D Passages

Holy crap. Asimov: had a reputation as a lecher that I knew about when I was a teen. I knew Piers Anthony, even wrote back and forth to him, but he, too, was rather typical for that generation. But Bradley??? Reading the wiki page freaked me out, I had no idea.

D&D 5E (2024) Kobold Press posts 2024 DMG Hit Piece

Regardless of any interpretation on the content, I will state outright I am using the new DMG at the table a lot more than the old DMG, and not just for magic item look up. So is the GMG good? Totally. But the DMG 2024 is also good, albeit for different reasons.

Elon Musk Calls for Wizards of the Coast to "Burn in Hell" Over Making of Original D&D Passages

Elon's on a list of "People I can't wait to never have to hear about again." It's a long list, and he's way up in the top three at least. FYI seconded to those who have mentioned what a good book this is for the actual enthusiast.

D&D 5E (2024) Kobold Press posts 2024 DMG Hit Piece

I think there's a world of difference between a DMG that has a "new DM guidance" section, and a DMG that is pretty much noting but new DM guidance. The new 2024 DMG is firmly in the latter camp, and while I like what it does, I suspect strongly that in a year or two WotC has plans for an...

D&D 5E (2024) Kobold Press posts 2024 DMG Hit Piece

By contrast, I assumed at first you were blasting WotC for their lackluster and unbalanced material. I use Kobold Press stuff and find it is much better than most of the other 3PP content available, and more well thought out than a lot of WotC content.

D&D 5E (2024) Kobold Press posts 2024 DMG Hit Piece

I'm going to go contrarian here and suggest that their review is spot on, and its problem is not being inappropriate but rather feeling a tad desperate. I have both the new DMG and the GMG from Kobold Press, and their review/stealth attack ad is pretty accurate. But to the OP's point, yes Level...

D&D 5E (2024) Did you make up your mind about 5.24?

Oh, this poll really needs a choice labeled, "I have it, I am running it with the new books, and my feelings about it are a mixed bag of screaming cats. I love cats, but these guys are freaking out on me and its very hard to carry this bag."

D&D 5E (2024) Did you make up your mind about 5.24?

On this point right here I have to suggest maybe you try DMing a bit. If you think there's a case where a DM isn't having to invent or think on the fly, you will be surprised. Even a rigid DM running a programmed module with loads of preset "read this" text likely has moments where he has to...

    Best Horror Role Playing Game

My personal favorite is Call of Cthulhu 4th edition, and Chill from the 1990's, followed by Unknown Armies. For more modern games Mothership is without peer, and I am rather fond of Liminal Horror, which is a great minimalist modern horror take. Worth mentioning as well is Vaesen, although its...

Players Don't Care About Your Setting

At any table there is likely 1 person who does care about the setting, and that player (sometimes known as the GM or DM) usually greatly enjoys it. The trick is to make sure the table has a good time, and so long as the balance between what everybody wants is maintained it should work well. If...

D&D 5E (2024) Should 2014 Half Elves and Half Orcs be added to the 2025 SRD?

I wonder, though, if any half elves made their way in by way of the various infamous tomes of Appendix N. Your point is well taken, though....it's just that, much like orcs in general and so many other things (halflings fer ex, and Balors who once long ago were actually balrogs) Tolkien's...

D&D 5E (2024) Should 2014 Half Elves and Half Orcs be added to the 2025 SRD?

It is entirely possible (I just couldn't get in to Dragonlance so have a lore-deficit there), but that emphasizes the real issue not being half elves, but being the lore itself focusing exclusively on negative connotations rather than positive.

D&D 5E (2024) Should 2014 Half Elves and Half Orcs be added to the 2025 SRD?

Leaving Tolkien aside, both half elves and half orcs have been a popular thing in D&D itself now for fifty years. That's enough reason for me to feel they should still be available. It is always easier to give than to take away, and people notice when something has been taken, as it has here...
