Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

You just repeated my own point back to me, but in a tone of disagreement.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

I don't know what you mean. Most indie RPGs will have a single writer/designer, maybe two. If there is a studio full of people, unless they are producing art and layout, then it isn't indie.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

To modern day sensibilities some of the things in the Bible are a bit unrealistic.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

I wonder with Dune whether it looks less idiosyncratic in retrospect because so many aspects of it have been absorbed and regurgitated in subsequent works in the genre. In the same way that e.g. Tarantino's pop culture references and inter-character small talk now seem less revolutionary than...

    Why I Hate Skills

It's as I said in the sentences you didn't quote. Someone makes a decision as to which characters (if any) knows. Or, you reframe the situation to be either about using the knowledge in a practical sense ('You can use your Know Arcane Metallurgy skill to get advantage on the lockpicking roll...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

It's the same definition. I am not even slightly interested in video games. if you're not talking about TTRPGs maybe you should flag that more clearly?

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

I didn't say he would? To qualify as an indie publisher he would have to write or design the game itself. Not just commission it. Not just develop it. Not just own the studio that publishes it. Not just type a three word prompt into AI autocorrect. Write or design it.

    Why I Hate Skills

I guess I don't mean that you should never do a 'do you know this particular piece of knowledge?' roll, just that they should be very rare. Normally it should just be the GM tells you if you would know based on your background etc, or be based on whether you have sufficient ranks in that...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Traditionally (sic) an indie rpg was one where the writer/designer(s) were also the publishers and so had full creative control.

? All library books are extensively fact-checked. At least, that's what AI told me.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

It's contextual. Sometimes it is a useful shorthand for a particular artistic movement and sometimes it is not. I don't know anything about indie video games. But if you said 'indie RPG' in the 2000s I would have a high chance of knowing what you meant. If you said 'indie music' in the 80s or...

    Shadowrun deserves better

Rolemaster is in the same boat I think. It's an unappreciated risk of making a new edition that is substantively different or more complex than the previous ones; you make it very difficult for the franchise to continue afterwards as you have split the fanbase (or rather, you have replaced one...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

It can be a broad descriptor or predictor of content when a particular type of X is outside the mainstream, but yes it becomes less useful when that type of X breaks through into (or outright replaces) the mainstream. It can speak to a certain sensibility that is outside of current commercial...

    Why I Hate Skills

Yes. The development of skill systems has led to a lot of things being accepted as normal when they are actually bad procedure. 'Roll to see if you notice anything' and (particularly) 'roll to see if you know anything' are bad play and should be eliminated.

What are you watching in (late 2025 and) 2026?

I just finished watching Boss, with Kelsey Grammer as the mayor of Chicago. It was pretty good, obviously the idea that an American politician could be corrupt is wildly improbable, but he is effective, and it's well acted and produced. It's a shame they didn't get to make more of it, there were...

AI/LLMs AI art bans are going to ruin small 3rd party creators

I guess I can imagine someone whose brain works differently to mine writing a complete poem entirely in their head and then transcribing it afterwards as a separate act, albeit in that case the writing (creating) process happened already. But thinking up an idea of a picture isn't the same...

AI/LLMs AI art bans are going to ruin small 3rd party creators

This only makes sense though if you get a fully-formed idea in your head of a poem, a piece of music, or a picture, and then the implementation part is simply the act of transcribing that defined thing into an external medium. That's certainly not how it works for me. When I sit down to write...

AI/LLMs AI art bans are going to ruin small 3rd party creators

This is absolutely false. The implementation is everything. What creative things do you do? In addition to playing/running RPGs I also paint miniatures and write poems, and I have previously written, produced, art directed, and published two RPG books. The implementation is the creative part.
