I prefer GM as the game frequently does not take place in a dungeon. But it's always a game. :)

Unless the magic-user has already been fighting someone else and took a bunch of hits from that, and didn't re-cast stoneskin, the stoneskin he cast in the morning should still be active, and he wouldn't need to cast it in the middle of combat as well.
