    White Dwarf Reflections #38

I thought the "sorcerer" on the cover was a necromancer. The cloudy eyed woman is a zombie, and there's a dead rat on the table along with the severed head. The dragons were carved / part of the chair with the bone held by them, and the snake and owl could be symbolic of knowledge / death. These...

    Dragon Reflections #102

You're welcome. Good articles, and not just for the nostalgia. They remind me of material that I liked / used, and may return to. So my thanks for the series.

    Dragon Reflections #102

I liked the cover. The articles on Gully Dwarfs, and the TS article I could miss. The adventure was reading material and I'm sure I cribbed some ideas from it. The canine article was mainly useful in prompting me to develop dog breeds for my campaign world. Not a bad issue, just kind of "meh".

    RPG Evolution: The Phantom Party

Most of my DMing experience is in home games. I ran some at the FLGS, but those were typically one shots for low level characters, introducing new players to the game. I set the adventures in my home setting and recruited a few players there for my home game. They could bring their PC from the...

    Dragon Reflections 101

We played from the mid 70s on. No problem with the "Satanic Panic". Looking back, I think I won the parent lottery :D Later as a teacher I has a parent question me about the game (I ran a game club for high school students). I told them that yes, there were demons, devils, vampires etc. in the...

White Dwarf Reflections #37 (January 1983)

It was released in 1978 iirc. The Monster Manual was 1977, and the DMG was 1979. They released one core book each year for three years. The monsters got an upgrade a year before the PCs :D

RPG Print News – Traveller, D&D, Mothership, and More

Individually I never had a problem with the Zhodani.... but their psionically dominated political system makes for one of the most effective and oppressive systems ever. Of course, what they are doing is "for your own good". Trust them, they know what you're thinking :D

    Dragon Reflections #100

Gygax came from a military miniature / wargame perspective (so did I). There are a lot of assumptions about the knowledge of people familiar with that niche area. As more and more non-wargamers flooded into D&Ds fanbase that method of writing became less viable. Every discipline has its own...

    Dragon Reflections #100

What made Forgotten Realms peoples favorite D&D setting was Greenwoods writing and, importantly, the lore he built the world with. I've always run my own setting / world, but I really enjoyed reading his stuff.

Worlds of Design: The Warship Trinity

The Leviathan class merchant cruiser from Adventure 4 was perfect for this. Four thousand L-Hyd tons displacement and designed for travel into the hinterlands. It had back up maneuver and jump drives just in case. A level of detail typical of British Traveller material. Anyway, back on topic...

No nomination from me, just the comment that this thread is a good place to find upcoming RPGs.

Gaming Journalist Rob Wieland Passes At Age 48

My condolences to his family and friends. It's always painful, but forty-eight is way too young to be leaving us. Rest in Peace.

    RPG Evolution: Minor Inconveniences

It's been done. Midkemia Press "Cities" supplement. One of my favorite worldbuilding books. It will help you build a coherent city, populate it, and provide a huge variety of random encounters (including ongoing encounters where the PCs walk into a situation already happening). Great stuff. I...

Hasbro Opens New Wizards of the Coast Video Game Studio in Montreal to Support D&D Franchise

I guess most of you don't follow the video game industry. Studios open and close regularly. Today's darling is tomorrows crash and burn. Ayoub, the head of the D&D franchise, has a solid video game background. If anyone is going to make this work for WotC he can. As for 2 studios close...

    White Dwarf Reflections #29

Designing a Quasi Medieval Society was a fun (and useful read). The Ale standard made me laugh out loud, and it made perfect sense too. Loved Stormbringer (and the later Elric game.) I have the boxed set, but didn't get to play it much (my group was wedded to D&D). Fifth Frontier War made for a...

    RPG Evolution: Weight, What?

Not for 5E, but back in the day... You (or the leader / caller) have to decide "run or fight." Then, if fight, you dump the heavy / clumsy stuff on the ground (have to be an optimist :D ) you can pick it up afterwards. If running what can you drop to distract the enemy or increase your speed :)...

    RPG Evolution: Weight, What?

Resource management was key in original D&D, and I liked it. Choices were important, what to take and what not to. The choice between eating and treasure was fun too (for the DM). It did make first level magic users useful after they cast their one spell for the day. Who needs a pack mule when...
