How does this differ from Radiant Citadel?

People have certain expectations about fantasy settings. If they don’t tick all the appropriate tropes they don’t like it and kick off.

I would argue that most D&D cities, from Baldur’s Gate to Sharn to Sigil to the Rock of Brall, are far more contemporary than they are medieval.

You know what a good model for slasher horror in Ravenloft? se7en. The killer isn’t after the PCs, the PCs are rushing around trying to track down the killer as they horribly kill NPCs. They have to stop them before they get to NPCs the players care about.

They are a waste of time. For horror to be effective it’s the players who need to feel fear, not the characters.

One of the issues is that the Dragonlance novels are written in 3rd person, so the stupidity of gully dwarves is word of god. If they hand a 1st person narrator then it could be put down to the prejudice of an unreliable narrator.

A novel is a novel, D&D settings are not novels, they exist to be played. If you want to read the novel it hasn’t gone anywhere, you can read it as many times as you like.

The PC’s tragic stories belong in Ravenloft. It’s the mistake 2nd edition Ravenloft kept making over and over again: tell someone else’s story and relegate the players to observers.
