I'm not sure if this helps, but on page 379 of the new MM, it lists all the creatures by creature type. On page 381, it lists all the creatures by group.

Doesn't the PHB catagorize weapons as "Simple Melee Weapons"/"Simple Ranged Weapons"/"Martial Melee Weapons" and "Martial Ranged Weapons"? I would rule anything showing up under "Melee Weapons" is fair game.
