    Team Players

This seems to be coming up lately, so let me try to ask it in poll form. It's one of those no right, no wrong answers, just a question of philosophy. EDIT: The question wasn't worded to make this clear, but I'm asking what do you personally do in your group (as opposed to what you think other...

    The Niche Protection Poll

Does the term "class" imply an exclusive niche? Vote away. "Exclusive" means something that is only accessible by taking the pertinent class (or a class within the pertinent group). For example, a bonus to base attack bonus/THAC0 is not exclusive, because all characters receive some level of...

    The Home of the Nerds

Time magazine is apparently interested in where nerds come from. Apparently the answer is Utah. Conversely, the District is less nerdy than all of the states (they must have a different definition than I do). However, playing Dungeons and Dragons is part of their definition of nerdiness.

How many hit points do you have?

Poll question cut off. Should read: "In your D&D game, how much does a character know about his own hit points (his total, how much damage he has, and how it compares to other things)?" I don't know that anyone's ever asked this here directly before, but it seems interesting. The question is...

    The Power of Prayer

Take the following character: a human fighter of moderate but not spectacular level (let's say he's level 6 or so). He's good at fighting but also a very pious man. He worships the local NG deity (let's say Pelor or some close equivalent; the most common NG deity who includes healing among other...

    New Place to Play D&D

Renter finds actual dungeon hidden beneath apartment. Uh, order some pizza and start rolling dice, I guess?

    A Question of Power

What ability scores do PCs start with, is the question. No poll editing, and it seems to have been cut off a bit. I can't remember this question being asked recently in any organized fashion, but it seems to play into a lot of things. I'm tagging it as 3e, but feel free to respond with regards...

    What is a "gish"?

Alright, let's see what the general understanding of this word is.

    Whoa, that's orange

Am I the only one for whom the thread titles and other linkable text suddenly just turned bright orange?

    D&D 5E Will there be a 5e Modern?

d20 Modern. CoC d20. Star Wars d20. M&M. Spycraft d20. And a whole lot else. D&D 3.0 spawned not only a plethora of variant fantasy rpgs, but a variety of rpgs inother genres, with variable but overall modest success. With 4e I know modern and/or scifi has been tried but not with anywhere near...

    D&D 5E The Rogue in 5e

We've got the magic-user thread, the cleric thread, and the fighter thread. What about the rogue? (I guess he's been hiding in the shadows while these other classes get beaten on). Some questions: How definitional is sneak attack to the rogue? Should it be an option or an inherent part of the...

    Is D&D Art?

The question doesn't refer to the snazzy pictures on the cover of your D&D books or your wall full of D&D branded novels, I'm asking this: *When you play D&D, are you creating art?* I offer the following definition, but feel free to use your own: Caveats: *If you say yes, that doesn't...

    Do You Use XP

Having seen it raised recently here, I'm curious as to how many people are using the XP system of their rpg as written. Feel free to explicate your response and the reasons behind it. For my part, I used to ad hoc XP but now have discarded the system entirely and level up when it seems right...

Using Heal to tell if a creature is dead

I seem to recall there was a Heal check to essentially "check for vital signs", i.e. to determine whether a creature is unconscious or dead. I can't find a reference for this skill use; the closest I came is the DC to tell if a creature paralyzed by a lich is alive or not (Heal DC 15). It came...

What can you shoot with a ballista?

I have a shipboard crew with a mounted ballista on the foredeck. They wanted to shoot at a large-sized bird that was flying back and forth across the deck and attacking people. I said no, but I find no justification in the rules (SRD, also expanded and revised in Heroes of Battle). Am I missing...

    Do you Use Miniatures?

Alright, I want to see this poll. Do you use miniatures for your D&D game (regardless of edition)? For my part, I occasionally use counters and basic maps but not miniatures. I find that having a grid makes it easier for some things (3.5).

    Alternatives to XP costs

Anyone have any good alternatives to XP costs (for spells, magic items, etc.)? I'm aware of PF's making everything a material component w/ 5x the cost.

    Charm vs. Compulsion

Here's the basic idea: Enemy uses Suggestion on party member. Party member tries to cast Charm Person and convince party member not to do suggestion. Who wins? I couldn't find much guidance within the rules for what to do with it.

    Hybrid In-Person/Online Games

So I came up with this idea: run a live D&D session, and then narrate some substantial events online before running the next session (advancing years and levels in between sessions). It seems to me like an awfully good way to cover a lot of plot and character with a short amount of time. It also...

Question: Races of the Wild-Halfling Rogue Substitution Levels

The first halfling rogue level from RotW says that the rogue's sneak attack deals an "extra" 1d6 for ranged attacks and 1d6 less for melee attacks. Does this mean that a 1st level rogue does 2d6 ranged SA ("extra" over normal SA) or just 1d6 ("extra" over non-SA damage)? The former seems awfully...
