I nearly fell down a pit!

I was walking down the street in Cambridge, MA when I looked down and saw on the sidewalk a 2x2 dungeon tile with a pit trap. Good thing I didn't step in it!

    Arcane Familiar: Mini Gelatinous Cube

Just what it says: a mini G-cube. Senses: Tremorsense 1 Speed: 3 Passive power: Resist acid 5 (or increase your existing resistance by 2). Active power: the mini gelatinous cube can engulf and carry a tiny or smaller object weighing up to 5 lbs, but cannot manipulate objects. Additional...

    Remebering blast vs burst

I'm always forgetting which area is blast and which is burst. Really, the designers should have tried to think of words which were not so similar and not so interchangeable. So I've thought of a mnemonic device: Burst is uround a space, while blast is at a direction.

    New fiendish DMing quirk

As we all know, one of the greatest joys of DMing is to irritate the hell out of players. Sometimes we do this with impossible encounters, or terrible puzzles, or ridiculous houserules. I am planning on doing the infamous "painful pronunciation". You know nothing riles up people more than...

My players are gonna kill me: Dirty kobolds!

I'm running the Kobold Manor scenario in the DMG, and my players have encountered the dreaded "kobold glue shot." Poor rogue got glued to the floor for the entire combat! So here's what I'm gonna do: They'll keep getting hit by these things, then when they get to the kobold boss encounter they...

    Mage hand: can it fly?

You can move mage hand 5 squares as a minor action... but can you move it UP? It floats around, right?

    Hadron Goblin Supercollider

To understand the fundamental nature of gobliness, I propose the following experiment: 1: Make a large circular corridor of hundreds or thousands of people with weapons, specially trained in attacking-but-purposefully-missing. 2: Put two goblins in the corridor, between the people. Everyone...

    Looking for a fantasy setting

I'm looking for a premade fantasy setting in which to run my 4e D&D game. I'd like a somewhat generic-fantasy-D&D world; mostly I want a resource with maps and nations, etc. Does anyone have any good suggestions? PDF or web resources? I don't need stats or anything, I just want a "sandbox" in...

Areas of effect in 3 dimensions

How are people handling 3-dimensional space in regards to areas of effect for powers (yeah, I know, it should be volumes of effect...)? For example, a scorching burst is a 3x3 square; does it become a 3x3x3 cube in 3 dimensions? Or a close burst 2; does it extend up and down from you 2 squares...

Brutal Strike: not expended on miss?

I see comments about the brutal strike not being expended on a miss, but in the power, I don't see anything for a "miss" effect. Am I missing something obvious?

    Vorpal bunny explained!

I figured out how the Killer Rabbit from the Holy Grail managed to be so deadly! Because it is such a small animal, its teeth have a damage die of 1. Adding the vorpal quality to it, its damage goes to infinity, because its die rolls are always maximum!

Trolls: impossible to kill without fire or acid?

The way I read it, it's impossible to kill a troll if you don't have an ability that does fire or acid damage. In 3.5 you could do creative things like suffocating or strangling them after they are down (doing ability damage), but in 4e you can't. So barring "making a bonfire while the rest of...

Portable hole: not for storage anymore

I just noticed that you can't pick up a portable hole if it's got a creature or object inside. So it's no longer a super duper bag of holding, just a super duper instant doorway. I'm only mildly disappointed; gone are the days of "we need to move this heavy stone sarcophagus? I just happen to...

    D&D 4E Mage hand in 4e: what's the deal?

The part about simultaneous movement confuses me. Is Mage Hand just a snazzy way to swap things in your hands? Seems kind of useless to me.

    Anti-martial effects?

D&D has traditionally had many effects that inhibit magic. Spell resistance, anti-magic fields, anti-magic beholder eyebeams, verbal/somatic/material components, dispel magic, etc. Is 4e going to have a similar set of effects to deal with martial maneuvers? We can all envision an aura that...

    Empowering heal?

Is it possible to empower heal or protection from elements or other spells that are "x points/level" etc.? After all, the 10 hitpoints/level from heal is a "variable numeric effect." It's not a "random" effect, but it is variable.

    Turning conventions on their heads...

Most fantasy settings hold similar conventions/themes regarding the nature of creation, history, etc. with a descending power factor. Creation was "top down" (everything created by the gods/one god/some primordial superbeing) and as history progressed things became more and more mundane. Most...
