Listening for something that's not moving

This question came up recently in my game. I set it to Base DC of 15 (whispering) and modified it based on circumstances. +2 for Door +1 DC/10ft -4/+4 per size category etc. +5 standing still -4 through +4 background noise In my case, a group of loud, well lit PC's were trampling through the...

    D&D Soundtrack

I bought it at Gen Con and used it a week later in an adventure. Overall, the tracks are good quality--not John Williams, but nicely done. They all easily convey emotion and feeling. For example, next time your players run into an Orc horde--use the "Beasts on the Borderlands" track...

    Encounter Distance--am I missing something?

I think it is odd. I was just reading through Siege of Ebonring Keep and they used encounter distances although I have no idea how they set their mechanics up since it doesn't follow 3.0 or 3.5 conventions. In the new Dungeon magazine, the encounters are set up detailing light conditions...

    Encounter Distance--am I missing something?

I was trying to find the rules for determining the distance between PC's and NPC's at the start of an encounter. The DMG has some rules listed by terrain type, but I couldn't find any for Underground/Dungeon. Can someone please point me in the right direction?

Encumbrance, hunger, and less gold = more immersive roleplaying...?

As a DM, I would rather cut out the accounting aspects of D&D and concentrate more on story and action. I have played in a couple campaigns where the DM loves going on and on about the types of beer at the tavern. It takes an hour or two just to make a stupid equipment run at a town. Don't...

    Rope Trick--someone please explain

although this discussion on bags of holding in a rope trick is interesting, and I appreciate the interest in the post, can we please get back to the main thread... How would you rule on the size of the extradimensional space listed in Rope Trick in your game?

    Rope Trick--someone please explain

the description of the Bag of Holding in the 3.5 DMG lists it as a Nondimensional space.

    Rope Trick--someone please explain

Artoomis, what is your opinion on the Rope Trick spell then? How do you use it in your game? My players use it to avoid encounters at night--seems too strong for a 2nd level spell and in comparison to the Leomands/Mords counterparts

    Rope Trick--someone please explain

would you have to open the bag of holding for the world to end or would you just have to bring it into another extradimensional space?

    Rope Trick--someone please explain

Why then would I memorize Leomund's Secure Shelter which is smaller, visible, takes 10 minutes to cast and is 4th level? Strangely enough-- why would I memorize the 7th level Mords Magnificent Mansion? At 8th level, I can cast my 2nd level spell, and sleep safely for 8 hours with no...

    Rope Trick--someone please explain

My question is how large is the "extradimensional space" that players are allowed access. Theory 1: you climb the rope into the extradimensional space to use as a camp. There is enough room for 8 creatures to sleep/memorize spells etc for 1 hour per level. Theory 2: you climb the rope into...

[GenCon] Checking in from the Front/First Impressions

Thanks for the updates. If someone would be kind enough to report on the status of the registration lines for Friday I would appreciate it. Please, someone reassure me that the glitches will be worked out by Sat. when I can get my stupid, non-pre-reg butt down there.

[3.5/3.0] Collaborative Effort: Collection of Round-by-Round Monster Tactics

Did anybody notice that with the change to the Darkness spell in 3.5 that drow become a bit nastier with their tactics. Now that it creates "shadowy darkness" the Drow can actually set ambushes by hiding in their darkness and being able to sneak attack with more efficiency.

When do you let your players craft items?

It seems most adventures or campaigns take place when time is of the essence and there isn't much downtime between adventures. Even one-shot games can take several gaming sessions to complete. In addition, the players usually need access to a workshop of sorts. When, in your campaigns, do you...

When do you let players craft items?

Thanks, I'll post this on the general boards for additional responses. I was thinking about letting players craft during the day, however, most craft skills need some type of workshop like a forge, alchemist lab etc.

    Bladesinger question

Can a bladesinger use the bladesong ability if they are using a buckler? The bladesong ability reads: Bladesong: When wielding a longsword in one hand(and nothing in the other), the bladesinger gains a dodge bonus to AC equal to his Intelligence bonus. Thanks in advance
