Level Up (A5E) Lair actions from O5e

Hi All, Does adding O5e lair actions to the comparable A5e critter change it's CR rating? thanks Mike

Counter spell and calling out spell levels

Hey Taran, That's the only place I've seen these rules... But casting Counterspell uses your whole reaction time, so you don't have any time left to do anything else. And trying to deduce what is coming at you once you're witnessed all the V/S/M components coming from the castor should take...

Counter spell and calling out spell levels

Well it's a reaction action to try to figure out what spell is being cast with an Arcana check. It's also a reaction action to cast Counterspell... so you're effectively giving spell-casters two reactions there... it's not RAW... but if that works at your table then more power to you! Mike

Counter spell and calling out spell levels

You tell your players that the bad guy starts casting a spell. They can then use their reaction to try and figure out what spell is about to be cast (ZGtE p.85)... or they can cast Counterspell at whatever level they choose (with no info as to which spell the caster is casting). Mike

D&D 5E Abjuration vs. Illusion - Which one should I pick?

From the Shield spell: SHIELD 1st-level abjuration Casting Time: 1 reaction, which you take when you are hit by an attack or targeted by the magic missile spell I agree this is a special case... but I also think most enemy casters are going to start from the top of their spell list... casting...

D&D 5E Abjuration vs. Illusion - Which one should I pick?

The Shield spell gives you the knowledge you've been targeted by MM. So the DM would have to tell you that first... so you can decide if you use shield or counterspell.

D&D 5E Abjuration vs. Illusion - Which one should I pick?

I would say that your memorized Shield spell would be telling you that you have been targeted by MM before you have to decide whether to counterspell or not. YMMV Mike

D&D 5E Abjuration vs. Illusion - Which one should I pick?

Well the 10th level abjurer ability mitigates that... a lot! Once you have Improved Abjuration, you should be able to trust that your high INT and proficiency bonus will counter only using 3rd level slots. Mike

    Counterspell

Hi all, I'm thinking adding the following: a bonus to the counter check when you use a higher spell slot then 3rd, but one that isn't high enough to automatically counter.. I.E. if you decide to counter with a 5th level slot, but the enemy is casting a 9th level spell... you would get +1 for...

    Clerics of arcana domain

Hi Clerics work the same regardless of which deity (domain) they choose. They can choose their daily allotment of memorized spells from the entire cleric list plus the extra domain spells from the divine domain they choose.

    Bolstering Wizards

If I were to allow something along theses lines... if would have to be via a feat (with prereqs. of 10th caster and 20 INT)... The 2nd spell out would need to be casted 2 lvls higher then normal (but not gain any higher lvl benefits from that) and both would have double the DC to maintain...

A technical question about Divine Soul Sorcerers

If you worship a lawful good deity, you can choose either cure wounds or bless as your affinity spell. You still choose 2 more 1st level spells for your known list at 1st level.. and these two can be chosen from the cleric or sorcerer lists.

A technical question about Divine Soul Sorcerers

The affinity spell is free and doesn't count in the 2 spells you know at 1st level. These 2 spells you know can be cleric or sorcerer spells. Mike

    D&D 5E Warcaster or Resilient(con)?

Well... your DM has already (mostly) given you the warcaster and magic initiate feats... so go with Resilient (con). Mike

    D&D 5E Balancing Full Casters with Non-Casters

Damage spells are not really going to out shine the dedicated martial characters... and the spells that may are all concentration. So the Wizard really has to decide to either buff his allies or debuff the enemies with his one concentration use for most of a combat. Once a caster "announces"...

    D&D 5E Wizard Spells

Couldn't there be an Arcana check to be able to work through the unique fingerprint of the other Wizard's spellbook so that each spell wouldn't be destroyed by copying it?
