Do you buy new versions of TTRPG games when you haven't had time to play the older version sitting on your shelf?

I have done so, if the things I've read about the new edition make it seem like it's going to be a better experience than the previous edition. Most of the time, though, I don't. Furthermore, it is at that time I usually sell the previous edition to Noble Knight, because if I've had it sitting...

Goodman Games Revives Relationship With Anti-Semitic Publisher For New City State Kickstarter [UPDATED]

Bledsaw posted a whiny screed complaining about "liberals" in gaming on the Judge's Guild Facebook page today. It's long enough that it might qualify as a manifesto. I got about three paragraphs in before I was so disgusted I blocked the page, so I can't further summarize (I don't want to link...

D&D General Matt Colville on the “Forever DM”

I'm no longer in contact with any of them, so as it turns out, they really weren't. My actual play group has become like family though, and I daresay, I'm even closer to them than my current home group. So, it's all good.

D&D General Matt Colville on the “Forever DM”

I used to play with a group where, while we had 3 GMs (including me), they absolutely refused to play anything else except D&D (3.X at that time) during my game days and no one else wanted to GM games for us during my game days. The group didn't last long after the point where I suggested we...

    Gamehole Con 2025 Thread

My wife and I are planning to attend. I'll have an Author's Table in the Dealer Hall again; hopefully life won't interfere to keep us away like it did last year.

    Ernie Gygax Has Passed Away

Hopefully he'll find the peace in death that so eluded him much of his life. Though, his marriage to Donna really seemed to bring him joy and contentment, so at least he had that over the last couple of years. I only really met him properly once. It was in the late '90s, I had driven up to WI...

    D&D General Gen Con Advice

It may be unasked for, but after years of attending Gen Con as both a participant and as a vendor, what I've written in my blog should be (IMO) required reading for all attendees. Take Care, Be Aware at Gen Con

Streaming services, which do you have or are you getting rid of?

We currently have: Perpetual Prime Netflix Disney+ Discovery+ Subscribed As-Needed Paramount+ DropoutTV (a year is cheap... so this may become perpetual) Not Currently Subscribed Hulu Acorn Britbox We'll drop Paramount+ once the next season of Strange New Worlds finishes. I'm still trying to...

WotC How much does Hasbro / WotC impact your feelings towards D&D?

I voted 3. Their actions have convinced me that I no longer wish to purchase WotC products (and especially don't want to subscribe to any of their services) in order to play D&D, but I'm not purging my existing 5e collection. If my group ultimately decides they prefer D&D to PF2, then I'll use...

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

Dude, I've known you for all of a couple of forum posts and I've enjoyed none of it. I'm not about to do homework for you. I've already apologized for offending your sense of right and wrong since my opinions are clearly wrong. I do not wish to continue this conversation with you, if that wasn't...

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

I apologize that my reply was not All Encompassing. I mentioned the first thing that popped into my head. I forgot that unless one is very specific and includes all other possibilities, people will assume one is ignorant of anything one doesn't mention.

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

I've been playing D&D for over 40 years. I'm aware that Raise Dead is A Thing, thank you. And IME, revolving door death cheapens the experience and has no bearing on how invested players are in the world. It just become a cheap thing with no consequences. YMMV.

D&D 5E Not upgrading? What version of D&D 5e are you sticking with?

Depending on my group, I'm either sticking with Pathfinder 2e or Tales of the Valiant (my preference). PF2e is a good game, but it's just different enough and just a tad more complicated than I like (though I LOVE all the player options, but as a GM, I don't get to use those much). I mean, I...

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

This is kind of my feeling as well. I never understood why some people seem to wear the number of PCs they've killed as a badge of honor. In D&D especially, character creation is too involved for meatgrinder style play, IMO. That's what DCC funnels are for, or Paranoia. Heck, even BEMCI or B/X...

Do you gaming groups that only play on system?

Yes, it was last minute. There were few ways in those days to notify players of anything ahead of time. I suppose I could have called them all up individually, but I expect (and can't remember exactly, because it was over 20 years ago) I didn't realize that I wasn't up for D&D until quite late...

Do you gaming groups that only play on system?

I have no idea. And it was so long ago now, I'm not even in contact with anyone from that group anymore. Such a hard line stance baffled me at the time.

Do you gaming groups that only play on system?

I've had group that only played one system. Back in the 3.X days, my group would only play D&D and when I suggested one night that we give my D&D brain a break and play a Star Wars one-shot or something else, a couple of players stood up to leave if we weren't going to play D&D (which really...

D&D General Poll: Did you watch the D&D cartoon when it was new?

At the time, I absolutely loved it. I never missed an episode if I could help it, even if it meant skipping other things I might otherwise have been interested in (like a Cub Scout outing to an Air Force Base). My friends and I invented stats for the weapons of power. My ranger HAD to have an...

Would You Get A D&D Tattoo?

I would get a fantasy TTRPG-related tattoo, but not a specific logo. If I'm going to permanently mark my body, it's going to be something personal to me, not some corporation's fleeting symbol.

GMs - Do you get bored when you're a player?

I've been playing for 42+ years and GMing most of that time, and I do get bored as a player, especially in tactical combat-heavy games where there's not a lot to do when it's your turn except plan your next turn. If there's a lot of role-play, then not so much as I find it much more engaging...
