Working with XML output from Character Builder

Check out w3schools (W3Schools Online Web Tutorials) and look at the XPath tutorials. It is language independent, and gives you a good querying method of pulling information out of the XML file. Most of the XML parsing that I have done has been using vba with Excel, but you could also set up...

    Profession/Crafting skills: Why?

I know it's not perfect, which is why I asked the question. I agree that the profession skill could be taken too far if you are going to allow full access to another skill, so you really need to define what those are. The point of the profession skill is to be able to perform minor tasks that...

    Profession/Crafting skills: Why?

The last game that I played in used craft skills heavily, mainly for determining how well an item was made. The dwarf in our party also had a code that he would not wear armor or use a weapon that was not crafted by his own hand. I want to pose this question about the Profession skill. Has...

I was "booed" for even showing the 4e Core books

Woohoo! Powers and Perils! The first game I started using a spreadsheet to track my character. :D Although I thought it did a good job for handling fighting ability and magical ability as two separate elements to develop. Skaven13

If 4th Edition didn't use the "D&D" moniker...

No I wouldn't. I already have a large number of books for games that I don't play, or have stopped playing, and adding another non-dnd game would not be in my budget.

    D&D 4E 4e Healing - Is This Right?

Actually, there were a lot of traps in AD&D that lopped off hands, fingers, feet, etc (I managed to take one of the pc's arms with one). and there were penalties associated with those injuries. 2E kept the swords of sharpness and vorpal blades, but no, you really don't see any serious injury...

    Chess and diagonals

Please, not the 'per turn' and 'per game' powers. Next you're going to tell me that pawns get 6+con 'reappearing surges', where they come back on the board on the round after they have been captured, all because nobody wants to play the bishop. :D

    Why all the healing?

because someone wants to shout out "barbarian, heal me!"?

Your preference for how "fragile" 1st-level character should be

Well, it depends on what the big centipedes are doing. If you just wander into the forest and bash them on the head, then nothing about that is heroic. If a couple of big centipedes is snatching and eating sheep from farmer John's place, then killing the centipedes is, IMO, something that 1st...

    Give me choices!

You are not alone. Most of us just argued on another thread. I discussed the new healing smite with a few of people I game with, and they don't like it either. Not because they cannot grasp the idea that the paladin is asking for two things at once, but it doesn't mesh well thematically with...

New Design & Development: Paladin Smites!

I'll agree to disagree with you on this, so that we don't derail this into an everquest vs wow thread. I'm not trying to say that everquest is better than wow. With how much popularity wow has now, I would agree that wow has definitely exceeded anything that everquest was. Everquest did have...

New Design & Development: Paladin Smites!

Actually, the damaging of my enemies is only going to happen when facing undead, and that is because of how healing is considered positive energy and the fact that undead take damage from positive energy. Turn the enemies into any living opponent, and now you are healing your enemies as well...

New Design & Development: Paladin Smites!

Actually, it took a graphical interface and the spread of internet access to really move the muds/mush style text based games into the everquest/wow games we have see. Everquest had mainstream popularity until WOW came along.

New Design & Development: Paladin Smites!

I liked this one too. The idea that you are forcing the enemy to deal with you over others in combat - very nice.

New Design & Development: Paladin Smites!

I agree, but I feel that the secondary effect should be thematically linked with the idea that this is an offensive martial power....wait...how many pages is this now? Seems like this discussion has gone on forever. :p

New Design & Development: Paladin Smites!

Yep. Do I have a problem with that? Nope.

New Design & Development: Paladin Smites!

No, that's not what I'm saying. People keep saying that they don't have a problem with an smite that also provides healing to a select ally, because they are just invoking power from their god. What I was stating is that, for the paladin, I would much rather see a broad area healing instead of...

New Design & Development: Paladin Smites!

No problem. Really. I was amazed I got through the whole article. :D Usually they bore me around the second paragraph, then I'm off to somewhere else. But these versions of smite feel very much of bo9s, and I wasn't impressed with a lot of the content in that book. I'm not going to say...

New Design & Development: Paladin Smites!

Yes, that was the one exception I could see, and here is why: it doesn't discern between my enemies and my allies. If my party is around me, then more than likely, so is the enemy. Even if the radius is something small as 5ft. It was mainly in reply to those who say the divine power "bleeds"...

New Design & Development: Paladin Smites!

You know, one good thing about this discussion is that it actually got me to read the article (which, with the new online format, has not happened that often). What did I get from this? I hate the idea of charisma instead of strength for a melee attack. Just one more thing. ;)
