I'd pay for character artwork definetely, but not for character stats. IMO players must create their characters in order to get familiar with them at start. I use NPC generator to create unimportant NPCs (bartenders, opponents, ...), while I like to create more important ones manually.

Well you could call for spot/listen checks when there is nothing to fight against. One of my DMs used to call checks to notice shephard with his sheeps in the field ;)

That's one of the reasons I like it (another one is fact that I like anime ;)) Actually, any sword can cut opponent's head, but as I see it, vorpal swords are enchanted to do that more often and since they are powered by magic they should do it flashy :D
