    Treasure Discussion: AD&D1, D&D3

re So 1st ed characters get more treasure but less levels, 3rd ed characters get more levels but less treasure. Does that seem right? Of course, the 1st ed characters don't get as much use out of their treasure because they can't sell items they won't use (so they have a lot of useless +2...

From high magic campaign to low magic

re Stunts could work to boost PC power, but keep spellcasters in mind too. Spellcasters without wands and scrolls are less powerful, but maybe they can come up with new methods to boost their spells per day. Ideas blood magic--sacrifice hit points to cast a spell temporary enchantments--like...

How Hardline a DM are You?

blah On Question A I saw this referee vs. guide DM thing in Dungeon #118, in a Dungeoncraft article by Monte Cook. One of his points was that you should pick one style and go with it, because mixing the two can confuse the players. Referee style is roll in the open, don't fudge rolls for...

re Maybe I should start a new Marvel game sometime soon... ...that would be an EX (20) idea!

    Druids are not Hippies!

re I also hate the environmentalist tree-hugger type druid stereotype. I myself am an environmentalist tree hugger, but it bugs me when I see druids played this way. Characters who will kill a dozen goblins, then lament the killing of one wolf. Its just a little silly.

How I like to be 'DMd'

I primarily DM, but I love to play with a DM I like. Here's what I expect: 1) Know the rules. Stick to them mostly, and be clear on your house rules. 2) Keep the session moving. This applies to rules rulings and the pace of the adventure. 3) I like a detailed world. If you have a homebrew...

"Reviewing" stories of homebrew adventures vs. published adventures

I was refering more to "logical" flaws, like the above mentioned basilisk in a slave camp. I understand editing RPG products must be horrendous. :heh:

"Reviewing" stories of homebrew adventures vs. published adventures

re Its more fun to tear down someone on the boards than attack an official product. If someone asks for help in a thread and someone finds a logical inconsitency (in D&D? you don't say!), its fun to take a big crap on the thread by attacking their idea. Its much harder to spit in a designer's...

    why are wizards so weak?

wizard Ha! Never heard that one before. I think that, as stated before, its the way you play a wizard that makes them powerful or not. I think the PHB could have done more to explain how to play a wizard. A few points: 1) Older edition wizards had much higher XP required to level up than...

The Faceless Reaver: Iconic Vile Cyricist

re Nice picture. You know, you have to walk them a few times a day or they pee all over the rug. What's he missing? His +2 Undead pooper scooper and bag of holding. I'm going to bad joke hell.

    Pondering Gestalt -- advice?

re Just read over the "adjusting CR" section in the Gestalt article in UA. You may need to bump up some monsters, which is a little more work. That, and slowing down play during the first few sessions figuring out how things work when class abilities collide. Remember, wizards still can't...

    Neandertal's? 'dem dere's orcs!!!

orcs as neandertals The first 3e game I ran was a prehistoric game, and I figured orcs were primitive humans and elves were advanced humans. It didn't really come up in game, but that was my thinking. True, neandertals were probably no more aggressive than humans, but that's not saying a lot...

Dungeon #126. Anyone have it yet?

re I usually see my issue well after its already out in stores, even though Paizo ships subscriber copies first. I think its like that for just about any magazine subscription. I was almost tempted to just make up stuff about the new issue...

'Old School' Experiences with D&D 3.5

description vs. punch a button Unfortunately, the dexcription of skills in the books and adventures (Dungeon, though I love it, is bad at this) often encourages people to just roll dice instead of just role-play. I also think of it as "push a button" mentality. People are so used to video games...

I Need Advice From D&D Folks...

re I like it. Its geared towards D&D players, so it will be mostly D&D players who get it. I really am amazed that people take the time to email someone to complain about something thats free. Do these people critique the samples at grocery stores also?

What does the future hold for your campaign?

coming up... I'm running two Eberron games with two different groups, both in Sharn. I. The first group is a warforged barbarian, elven ranger and halfing wizard/rogue. They have joined the Boromar Clan (the Sharn equivalent of the mob), had a run-in with a competing criminal organization...

    Attack rolls vs. Defense Rolls

works for me I actually do defense rolls against a static attack DC from the enemy (11+attack modifiers). I used to do opposed rolls, but this is much easier. I like it a lot. It makes the players feel like they have some control over whether their character gets hit. It gives them something...

    Magic Weapons for "Throwers"

re The easy way to keep track of thrown shuriken is just assume that half of them are lost or broken when the PCs search for them. What if the daggers aren't enchanted, but the NPC has some kind of magical gauntlet that enchants the daggers he throws? Too keep things a little more balanced...

The Goliath: What do you think?

re I like the race. The powerful build trait seems really powerful, but then again it doesn't get much else for being +1LA. I'll probably introduce them into my upcoming Eberron game. Actually, I'd really like to play one.

Fun with the Monster Manual and a 3 year old

re The first D&D book I ever bought was a 1st ed Monster Manual, when I was about 9 years old. It took me a few more years to get some real books, but I had fun reading that book and looking at the illustrations.
