    Payn;s Ponderings@ Battletech General Discussions

If you're thinking of this section of Catalyst's website, it's out of date! Kind of disappointing. Somebody on Reddit posted this guide to the boxed sets and rulebooks much more recently but it doesn't address Technical Readouts or any of the setting material (game sourcebooks or fiction). I...

    Payn;s Ponderings@ Battletech General Discussions

I never answered @payn's question, did I? I've only read a couple of Battletech novels -- Decision at Thunder Rift by William H. Keith and Double-Blind by Loren Coleman, the latter of which was recommended to me as having good examples of people fighting 'Mechs with lesser technology. There's a...

    Payn;s Ponderings@ Battletech General Discussions

If you want to get seriously into the Battletech board game, it's an amazing deal. The base tier is the core rules and unit-construction rules for the board game, and the core and so far only book for the latest RPG for the setting. Then the bonus collection adds lots and lots of extra optional...

OD&D How are your original dice holding up?

Mine came in the Mentzer Red Box, but a late enough version that they were pre-inked and each a different color. They're aging very well - no visible wear. I had a great moment a few years ago when I realized that half the people at the gaming table were younger than those dice.

D&D General One Piece of Art- What D&D Art Inspired You to Love a Class?

This bard from the 5e PHB. I wish I knew the artist's name: I love the self-assurance. Here is a character who is ready for whatever the DM throws at her.

D&D General All Time Favorite Dragon Magazine or Dungeon Magazine Content

#184 was the first issue of my subscription! I'd been picking up individual issues here and there starting with #138, then made the jump to subscribing and kept it up into the low 220-s. "The Sunset World" from #150 and "The Color of Magic" from #200 have already been mentioned but they're...

Why Dragonlance's Margaret Weis Left TSR: A Slaying the Dragon Excerpt

It really is amazing. I haven't gotten a copy of Slaying the Dragon yet, but my big takeaway from Jon Peterson's The Game Wizards is that nobody at TSR ever learned how to run a business. Nepotism and poorly-thought-out ventures were the norm from the very early days on.

    D&D 5E Character Portraits

At least some of the old portraits are still on the D&D site moved to http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/arch/pc. There are also some new ones at http://dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/character-portraits.

D&D 5E Princes of the Apocalypse rebuilt as a megadungeon?

It seems like most of my (rare) posts lately have to do with the Temple of Elemental Evil, but... what you're suggesting sounds a lot like reconstructing the Temple of Elemental Evil, after Princes of the Apocalypse deconstructed it. Which means that, if you're the sort of DM who enjoys...

full list of monks of clanngeddin abilities

I'm not sure there's more to be found than this, in the Candlekeep Library: So it looks to me like like it's not an official class, but one fan idea of how to flavor the standard monk class.

    Converted T1-T4

There are conversion notes in the ENWorld download library -- from Herzog here and from TheYeti1775 here. I haven't used either myself, though.

D&D 5E Running T1-4 (ToEE) for the first time. Any advice?

    p. 43 of the original module has a bit about how Temple agents "roam near and far to bring all sorts of evil humans and humanoids into service." That could be expanded into a whole series of adventures that don't even involve setting foot in a dungeon -- who are these agents? Where are they...

D&D 5E Running T1-4 (ToEE) for the first time. Any advice?

Another thought: you could make it a spy story! There are already secret agents all through Hommlet and Nulb to work with and against. The party could be recruited by one of the undercover agents of good to collect evidence that the Temple is becoming a threat again, rather than taking it down...

D&D 5E Running T1-4 (ToEE) for the first time. Any advice?

When I tried running TOEE a long time ago, it bogged down not very far into the temple proper. The campaign had become just one fight after another and the players got bored with it. On reflection, I see it as a Yojimbo/A Fistful of Dollars/Last Man Standing scenario presented in a form that's...

    D&D 5E Honor & Sanity

They're part of the chapter on customizing rules for your campaign; Honor as an ability score is suggested for campaigns "in a setting inspired by Asian cultures, such as Kara-Tur in the Forgotten Realms" or focused on a knightly order, and Sanity is for when you want to mix some Call of Cthulhu...
