D&D General Why do people like Alignment?

I like an alignment entry for NPCs and monsters in pre-written adventures as a shorthand to pay more attention to that challenges description. I find that very useful for reminding me of some approaches to an encounter, quickly.

D&D General 5.5 PHB Species Options

Saves are a critical part of the game that only gets more critical the more levels you have. Wisdom save is arguably the most important save in the game at mid to high levels. A Human with Lucky (a common feat for Humans) is likely at mid to higher levels spending all three re-rolls on saves.

D&D General 5.5 PHB Species Options

It's not "versus magic" anymore. It's now simply, "You have Advantage on Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma saving throws." All of them, always-on. They also now have a 30' speed, 60' Darkvision. And you get Minor Illusion (a great cantrip) and Speak with Animals (Prof Bonus times a day) OR...

D&D General 5.5 PHB Species Options

I disagree. I think almost all will continue to be useful. Most take no action resources (a couple take a reaction), they're just a rider on something you'd already be doing. And while a d10 damage is less meaningful at higher levels, it's never not meaningful, and it's still a free rider, and...

D&D General 5.5 PHB Species Options

A barbarian would have advantage in all saves except con (which they're proficient with) playing a gnome for example. Advantage definitely helps. Sure, you can only roll as high as a 20 and if you have a low bonus that means your max is likely a 19, but that's still a good roll for almost the...

D&D General 5.5 PHB Species Options

The optimizers love the Goliath this edition. So many little helpful powers usable proficiency bonus times a day.

D&D General 5.5 PHB Species Options

Gnomes get advantage on Wis, Int and Chr saves (plus darkvision and some free cantrips and/or first level spell). That's really strong, and I'm surprised they're not more popular.

Dungeons & Dragons: Heroes of the Borderlands - First Impressions

I think you could do Paladin, Barbarian, Ranger and Bard. I don't think Bard is too much text. Seems about the same as Cleric text.

WizKids to Release New Red Dragon Plaque, With More Manageable Head Size

I dunno I think they're cool, just the kind of cool décor I'd expect to find in a good game store.

These seem like the kinds of things which belong in a game store

Dungeons & Dragons: Heroes of the Borderlands - First Impressions

I watched some videos of this and immediately thought "I want to make some additional classes for this." It comes with Fighter, Cleric, Rogue, Wizard. Each have a choice of two sub-classes once you reach level 3. Seems like it wouldn't be too difficult to make these kinds of character sheets...

What are you reading in 2025?

Ah, perfect, yes. I think I read Leiber and Moorcock in my teens, but its been so long it would be practically new to me now. And I don't think I ever completed a full run of either author, so that's perfect for lining up after Conan. And I know I never read Pratt and de Camp, except that I'm...

What are you reading in 2025?

Ah right, of course. I should have asked the question differently. I am looking for additional slightly more obscure books to read. I am reading the Conan books for the first time now, which I'm enjoying. Looking for other authors.

What are you reading in 2025?

On that note, what would you say are some others that have concentrated work that made its way into D&D, other than Vance?

What are you reading in 2025?

Just finished reading Three Hearts and Three Lions by Poul Anderson. Great old fantasy book that was direct inspiration for some of what ended up in AD&D 1e. Trolls, Nixies, Law vs Chaos, bunch of other stuff pulled directly from this book. A fun, older read similar to Vance.

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

More I look at the Circle of Preservation Druid, it's overpowered. No concentration always-on temp hit points to your whole party every round is just Twilight Cleric's mistake. Always injuring emanation with no concentration is just a better spirit guardians. This is just too much, at low levels...

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

Druid looks overpowered to me. That field damages foes when you move it over a foe, and when the foe moves into it or ends its turn there. You can move the field every turn. So they're going to be sweeping the battlefield every turn. Too similar to the couple of broken spells that work like...

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

You start with a 17, so it's 3 points of 4 points assigned to it by level 6. But this is why I mentioned it's likely going to be a multiclass, with a focus on Charisma, and True Strike. My guess is Swords Bard (once they update it) will be the most likely multiclass? Regardless you could have...
