Games you need to go outside your normal group to play

My guy's group is not fond of WEG D6 Star Wars. Luckily my teenage kid's group loves it, so I get my fix there.

    GMs: When Is Enough Enough?

So my buddy and I switch off being DM. He likes long-running campaigns (our current B/X-OSE game is on session 52), but every 6-8 months either real life gets in the way for him or he gets burned out, then I jump in. I prefer shorter campaigns (8-12 sessions, but I've run 20-22 sessions as well)...

    AD&D/OSRIC: How did initiative work?

Yes....and no. If magic isn't involved, it is a simple d6 IGOUGO situation. Magic (and Gary's obsession with resolving ties) complicates it somewhat. Even with magic, it only becomes an issue if the caster WINS initiative. With melee, it kind of becomes a codified common sense approach...

    AD&D/OSRIC: How did initiative work?

No two people can 100% agree on how AD&D initiative worked, but here are my 2 coppers: After surprise is resolved (that is a WHOLE other post) spell casters must declare their spells. Both sides rolled a d6, generally high wins initiative and goes first, with the understanding that movement...

    Our Physical Fitness

Between shoulder issues and tendon issues in my dominant arm, I don't lift anymore. I do pushups (incline, decline, wide-arm, standard, etc), crunches, dips, and other 'body mechanic' type strength exercises. Then I jump on the recumbent bike for 30 minutes/6 miles. All of that 4x a week.

Spoilers Star Wars: Andor season 2

Yes, S2, E1-3 were VERY weak. Essentially 1 episode worth of story stretched over 3 episodes. And again, yes, there was no real 'arc' to E1-3. I also was very disappointed . Arc 2, E4-6, is better, but not great. They are building to a flash point, but taking their sweet a$$ time doing it...

    What Are Your Non-Gaming Hobbies/Interests?

I do "cowboy" historical reenactment. I write published historical articles about Old West history. I give lectures on Old West topics. I do a podcast on the Old West. I do non-competitive shooting. I drink whiskey and smoke cigars.

Spoilers Star Wars: Andor season 2

I am a big fan of Season 1, and I hope Season 2 rocks, but I had issues with the "4BBY" episodes. 1. It felt like 1.5 episodes of material strung out to 3 episodes. 2. I don't mind fractured and unorganized rebels, but the level of Three Stooges antics and space rock-paper-scissors was...

What Show Should Have Only Had One Season?

Heroes is the quintessential answer to this question. I grew tired of the 'world ending disaster of the season' plots. They should have either ended at season 1, or (as I was hoping) go the full 5 seasons and show us how The Future that was shown was inevitable and how we get there despite...

D&D (2024) 13 Attacks a Round the Most You Can Get?

First, B/X doesn't have multiple attacks for fighters against 1HD creatures, that is OD&D (AD&D does 1 attack per level against monsters with 1-1HD or less. Second, even when using the OD&D rule of 1 attack per level for monsters of 1HD or less, there are several limiting factors. (a) All...

How Would Your Favorite Game System Handle This?

Regardless of system, and actual rules written for said system, I'd probably run it in such a way that each character involved has tasks to accomplish that will aid one or more other characters if successful. An modern-game example of which would be the ' Overwatch' character hacking the CCTV...

D&D General Do you track ammunition?

YUP!! I can't tell you how many times my players needed 100 feet of rope, but only had a 20' piece, a 10' piece, and a 30 foot piece. We track rations per day in the wilderness, arrows, rope, etc. If you just hand wave away these things, there are much fewer, if any, difficult non-combat...

D&D General Do you track ammunition?

Yes, but I have them do it. I remind them at the end of every combat (as DM). Yes, also, as a player.

TTRPG Genres You Just Can't Get Into -and- Tell Me Why I'm Wrong About X Genre I Don't Like

System-wise: FATE and Savage Worlds. I cannot grock either one, and I've tried. Genre-wise: Cyber-punk, Paranoia, and transhuman sci-fi type games; also "Weird West" type games. If I'm playing a western game, I want a traditional western. I love Super Hero games (ICONS is my go-to). I love...
