    OSR Why B/X?

Yep. Fantastic cover but it was painful flipping through the pages and comparing the new art to the likes of Otus, Dee, Willingham, Elmore and Easley. That made it very hard for me to accept the RC as a true continuation/reiteration of those prior releases.

    OSR Why B/X?

This is so freaking true. Me and my friends all claimed to play AD&D since we bought all the books and had Rangers, Paladins, Barbarians and the like but really all we were playing was B/X with those races, classes, and monsters (plus a few other things like Exceptional Strength for...

OD&D Resolving Combat with OD&D using Chainmail rules against non-Chainmail monsters?

Hello, I know that most who play OD&D simply use the "Alternative Combat Method" that syncs up with pretty much every version of D&D/AD&D up until 3E but I've been reading through both the OD&D and Chainmail rules and have been trying to wrap my head around the idea of going full Chainmail for...

D&D General Dice Fudging and Twist Endings

I really find such a descriptor to be quite the misnomer, though I realize that it's so commonly used that me taking issue with it is hardly going to change anything. I mean DL1 Dragons of Despair introduced the notion of "obscure deaths" and giving outs for PC's (and prominent NPC's) to live...

D&D General Dice Fudging and Twist Endings

I don't like fudging die rolls nor do I ever want my DM to fudge. It just feels wrong and cheap (to me, your mileage may vary.) However me and my buddies don't like just giving the dice carte blanche to utterly ruin people's fun either. To me that defeats the purpose of the game so we always...

    D&D 2E On AD&D 2E

Wow, thanks for posting the link to "Adventures Dark and Deep" (nice initials, heh heh.) I'd never heard of that unofficial expansion but now I'm off to hunt for reviews on YouTube. :)

    D&D 2E On AD&D 2E

That is really cool. I could really go on and on with regard to Holloway. He was such a master of seamlessly blending badass with buffoonery which exemplified so very many of my actual early role-playing experiences, lol.

    D&D 2E On AD&D 2E

Yes! Yes!! Plus this one with the fainting halfling and the elf doing the outtake to the reader thinking I'm gonna die with these idiots aren't I, lol.

    D&D 2E On AD&D 2E

Of those games I've only played DCC and was very pleasantly surprised to see his illustrations making a comeback. I feel like the pic of the terrified townspeople trying to impale the skeleton with the pitchfork is already a modern classic.

    D&D 2E On AD&D 2E

One of my very favorite RPG illustrators. Not just for D&D but also Star Frontiers and Paranoia.

    D&D 2E On AD&D 2E

Your post is a great example of why I can love Otus, Sutherland, Trampier, et al just as much as Elmore, Caldwell, Parkinson, and Easley despite the latter four being arguably technically more accomplished illustrators. With Elmore or Caldwell paintings I look at them and can easily think I...

D&D 5E WotC: Why Dark Sun Hasn't Been Revived

Yes, like 2nd Edition AD&D which still provides everything you need (core rulebooks and campaign setting resources) on driverthrurpg.com. Though I suppose that's still technically "WOTC" unless you want to go the ebay route and purchase the original products.

    D&D 2E On AD&D 2E

Most definitely! Hence the "among others" of which they are at the top of the list. 🙂

I have no idea if this is a hot take or not, but...

Oh yeah? Well I'll do YOU one better. Otus, Dee, and Sutherland were the beginning of the end and the soul left TSR when they stopped releasing products with fully naked women on the covers. (I kid, I kid, I love all the aforementioned artists from Sutherland to Elmore, etc., lol.)

    D&D 2E On AD&D 2E

I never used them but loved the cover art and (like we've discussed previously in this thread) they were still fun to read.

    D&D 2E On AD&D 2E

Yeah. I think for me since I'm primarily a Dragonlance guy I consider AD&D to be one single edition from 1977 up to about 1994 or so. The Revised 2.5 AD&D Rulebooks (with Combat & Tactics/Skills & Powers) and Dragonlance SAGA rules which all kicked in around the same time feel like a departure...

    D&D 2E On AD&D 2E

I would vote 1E. Because while you do lose Brom and DiTerlizzi you gain Otus, Dee, and Willingham (among others) and still keep Elmore, Caldwell, Easley, Parkinson and Holloway and all at their peak no less.

    D&D 2E On AD&D 2E

Matt Colville's comment that 5E rules are like "oatmeal" is spot on. And I just don't find any joy in reading the instructions on the back of a packet of oatmeal.

    TSR AD&D 1e MMIII?

    That...is stupendously awesome. Bravo!
