D&D 5E Scimitar of speed and Sword of Dancing RAW question

Note that the bonus action attack does not count as you using the "Attack Action", so there can be some abilities that don't work as a result. I agree with the rogue sneak attack ruling. Jeremy Crawford says no. Cheers, Merric

D&D 5E Thoughts On The Meh 5E Adventures.

Any adventure that is doing stuff I haven't seen before tends to get higher marks. :) Cheers, Merric

D&D 5E Thoughts On The Meh 5E Adventures.

2E had high spots, but trying to find them amongst the morass of "meh" material was a pain. The classic era of D&D adventures is 1978-1984 or thereabouts. (Not that all were great, but a lot of them were memorable). 5E is the next era that has really concentrated on high-quality adventures...

D&D 5E Thoughts On The Meh 5E Adventures.

Perhaps the best OSR adventures do, but there are a lot of OSR adventures that are far, far worse than anything Wizards has released.

D&D General Matt Colville on adventure length

Well, it's obvious really: You respond well to the threat of imminent global destruction (or something like that). I mean, "Apocalypse", "Annihilation"! ;) Cheers, Merric

Apart from Dragon Heist (which wins every award for most misleading title), are there any that are really misleading? Cheers!

D&D 5E Thoughts On The Meh 5E Adventures.

I've just started playing - not DMing! - Drakkenheim. I'm fascinated to see what our DM makes of it! (Everything I've heard about is great). Cheers, Merric

D&D 5E Thoughts On The Meh 5E Adventures.

Adventure structure is very much a fascination of mine. And SKT is bizarre. Some of it is great - but so badly designed. Other parts make you wonder if sections got cut out. The basic structure of the adventure becomes a lot better if you start with Lost Mine of Phandelver (especially if you...

D&D 5E Thoughts On The Meh 5E Adventures.

Because my fascination is adventures, I'll still buy them. Though most of the adventure compilations are lying unread at present. (Too many things, not enough time!) I'm fascinated to see how Vecna goes. I really, really hope it has better QA than The Shattered Obelisk. Cheers, Merric

D&D 5E Thoughts On The Meh 5E Adventures.

It's a deeply flawed adventure, and another that is one of my favourites of all time. Watching my group realise that the person they were working for wasn't who they thought, and looking around for a solution - great divergent gameplay! Cheers, Merric

D&D 5E Thoughts On The Meh 5E Adventures.

Yeah. It's why the most important thing about an adventure is getting DMs to want to run it. If you fail at that... I'm fine with not all adventures appealing to everyone. Give me an adventure that SOME DMs love to bits, but not all, and I think it's worthwhile. (Tyranny of Dragons is that way...

Worlds of Design: The Problem with Magimarts

I allow players to buy magic items in my games. Magic items are available, but in "hidden" trades, so the average citizen isn't aware they exist. As a downtime activity, my players can seek out the trades, making a Persuasion check (with a bonus if they spend money). The basis for this is the...

D&D 5E What Are Your Favorite Short Adventures and Collections for 5e?

Sly Flourish's Fantastic Adventures. It's funny, I've run a lot of short adventures this edition (especially as part of the DDAL), but not many are really sticking in my mind. Cheers, Merric

D&D General Tier Rankings of the main D&D Campaign Adventures

I did this for fun recently... and possibly was a bit too generous. But, hey! :) For those unaware of tier rankings, “S-tier” is the top, followed by A, B, C, D, and finally F. S-Tier: Lost Mine of Phandelver (original starter set) Curse of Strahd A-Tier: Hoard of the Dragon Queen Rise of...

D&D General Matt Colville on adventure length

Some of the OSR has a lot to answer for. Why do I say that? Because there's a section of the OSR that promotes this sort of toxic DMing. Long, long stays at first level. Brutal combats. And no experiences to make new players want to stick around. D&D should be challenging, and I'd love more...

D&D General Matt Colville on adventure length

Players losing characters in their first session and quitting the game goes back to the very first session ever. From the Secrets of Blackmoor site, describing the very first session of Blackmoor: "Bob Meyer describes the game as being frustrating because he had no references as to how strong...

D&D General Matt Colville on adventure length

I'm fast, and other people get distracted. ;) But if you look at the expected levelling times (1 session for level 1 & 2, 2 for each thereafter), Lost Mine - levels 1-5 - should take 10 sessions. Ish. Now consider how long AD&D adventures will take for your group! Cheers, Merric

D&D General How many DMs buy (official) adventures?

I agree, and I'd assume that is true for most DMs. (Most of them aren't rabid collectors like me). How many do you think buy no adventures at all? (Or only get the starter set?) Cheers, Merric
