D&D General Matt Colville on adventure length

It's not the same as getting a single 32 page book that interests you. You're still buying a 200+ page book that you likely won't finish.

    Removing "Friction" In-Game?

What would be the effects of literally removing friction as a way physics behaves in your campaign world? A little background. We're running a very limited campaign that will last until the teenagers leave for college. Their last quest is to get the Book of Law. The megalomaniac ruler of the...

    D&D General Castle Zagyg Preludes

I don't want to give the impression that I don't like anything about this KS. I own a lot of TLG stuff, and I backed the Book of Names individual book of this set. I just don't want a 200 page treatise on developing Gygax's version of an actual realistic Medieval European thieves' guild. After...

    D&D General Castle Zagyg Preludes

This is exactly the kind of stretch goal I don't like to see, since it's not really connected to the main project. We have a $450 Encyclopedia set of world-building content somewhat written by Gary Gygax, And now as a last-minute stretch goal, they're including a portion of a mega dungeon...

D&D General Swords & Wizardry & Mythmere Games & Matt Finch

I've been prepping to run a S&W adventure. I remember a few years ago there was an online SRD database. It seems to have been taken down. Any S&W fans have info about this?

    Anyone played Masks of Nyarlathotep?

I like the globe-trotting nature of it. That lends to a pretty quick pace. New York, Kenya, Egypt, Shanghai, (I don't remember us getting to Australia). Also, there are big set piece areas that lead to memorable scenes. The cults in the different areas feel different - but are still connected...

    Anyone played Masks of Nyarlathotep?

I GMed it in its entirety about 6 years ago (before the expanded version was released.) Any specific questions, or do you just want to read my high praise for it?

    Geek Confessional Thread 2024

It usually happens on its own. But if I were a writer composing a novel, trust me, there would be many hours I'd cut from the narrative.

    Geek Confessional Thread 2024

    1. I don't watch TV shows. I don't have the patience. 2. Stuff like Game of Thrones or the Joker movie I find distasteful to root for a villain as the protagonist. 3. If a story can't be told in under 500 pages, the book is overwritten. (I also don't read a series beyond Book One.) 4. I don't...

Ben Riggs: 'The Golden Age of TTRPGs is Dead'

That makes sense. However, I'm finding that the 32 page length of older editions is deceptive. I'm working on finding a classic adventure module to run for an upcoming weekend that would be playable in 8-10 hours. Many of the adventures I'm examining are crammed with content. If they were given...

Ben Riggs: 'The Golden Age of TTRPGs is Dead'

I ran Red Hand of Doom during the 3.5 era. I thought it was a great adventure - not only because of the theme of a "dragon war." I enjoyed how (through play) the party became invested in the areas - the towns, NPCs, and groups that made up the region. The objectives were varied ("defend this...

They could use design articles online for that purpose, perhaps?

D&D General Bestest, Most Epic-est Short Adventure?

I have both OSRIC and For Gold and Glory - as well as the official printings of 1st and 2nd editions. I've also got a few OSR-ish systems, including Old School Essentials, Basic Fantasy, Hyperborea 3e, Swords & Wizardry, and Castles & Crusades. Part of it is time to prep - I have three weeks to...

D&D General Bestest, Most Epic-est Short Adventure?

Hey everybody. I've got a quick change of plans and not a lot of time to prep. I'm hosting and running a gaming weekend in a couple weeks for a group of old college pals. Typically, we do this annually, but it's becoming more difficult with each passing year. The original plan was I would run...

Ben Riggs: 'The Golden Age of TTRPGs is Dead'

Not caring about veteran players is a strange angle to take when they have an upcoming adventure anthology with Pharaoh, Barrier Peaks, Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth, and the Lost City included. What more do we want? Even the new stuff to be old?

It's still out there. Very playable in the modern day. Give it a shot.

Ben Riggs: 'The Golden Age of TTRPGs is Dead'

I have his books. The Lazy DM style works for 5e and OSR - and that's about it. And then there are games widely different from trad games - for example Scum and Villainy. That's not something that can be read, understood, and prepped in under and hour (if it's your first time with a system).

    D&D 4E Best VTT support for 4e?

I played a short campaign (not DMed) of 4e on Fantasy Grounds. I think it used to be supported on there, but the official modules were taken down (I believe). There are some who still use what they had saved to their hard drives - I have no idea if it's possible to recreate those settings or...
