Order of the Stick 859: Smoked

That is the coolest spell effect I've seen, and by a large margin.

    Advantages / Disadvantages

While I'm happy to provide a laugh, I have to disappoint you because I'm not joking. Rolling two d20s and taking the higher (or lower) isn't something that feels D&D to me. What feels the most D&D to me is rolling a single d20 to resolve an action.

    Advantages / Disadvantages

I don't like the multiple dice in D&D. First, it doesn't feel like D&D. Second, you end up with the worst of both worlds when you you have a mixture of rerolls and flat bonus/penalties which can totally happen in the current rules. Third, it doesn't work well with DMs using hoards of creatures...

What edition had the ideal version of each class?

I agree that's the trend, and that it is quite interesting. But I find the 2e specialty priests my last choice for clerics or any class for that matter. I didn't know there was such love for them.

What edition had the ideal version of each class?

Cleric: 3e, domains! Fighter: 1e with UA Magic User: 1e Rogue: 3e over 2e by a smidgeon

Your D&D edition is not a football team

An interesting take on what I wrote.

    OotS 830

I don't know, but he is at $89k now after maybe 36 hours and nearing his top tier of $96k. That tier he added after filling in his bottom tier in 12 hours.

Your D&D edition is not a football team

When you root for a football team, nothing changes if they win or lose. Sure you might be happy or sad, and you might be able to go to a championship parade or buy a nice championship hat or shirt, but that's it. When the game style you prefer prevails, it means that the new version of D&D will...

    OotS 830

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Kickstarter thing yet. Perhaps it was in another OotS thread. Rich talked about it yesterday the main Giant in the Playground page. I figured this triple-sized comic was a thank you for almost funding the minimum needed. By now the minimum needed has...

    A mini-rant re: Pathfinder and D&D

You missed the group of 3rd edition and earlier players who don't think PF is superior to those previous versions, but allow D&D to cover the entire spread of D&D games. Yes, when we play Mazes&Minotaurs or Arcana Unearthed or someone's homebrew mash up of fantasy rules, we call it D&D. But...

    New OotS is up!

In our world osmium is $400/oz. I wouldn't call a huge elemental made out of it cheap.

    New Years Resolutions For Gamers

Mine would be: 1) Try to play an RPG at least once this year. I'm newly a dad to twins, so gaming is taking a back seat in my life right now. 2) If I can pull of #1, try not to play with all the same people I played with last year. Some of those people would be okay, but I'd like to break out...

    Rock Falls, Everyone Dies

As the power ballad by Journey plays on, someone enters through the door. Don't stop ..you become the DM and get to devise the next deathtrap. When the next hapless reader falls to your trap, it will then be that unfortunate soul's chance to take out the next reader.

New Legends & Lore: Player vs. Character

I'm missing why aesthetics can't be shared beyond one player in the group.

New Legends & Lore: Player vs. Character

In my view, it is not "simpler" by any economic definition to produce two entirely different lines of D&D RPGs to change a rather minor point. Going back to my magic item analogy, I don't think there needs to be "D&D Monster Manual II with magic items" and "D&D Monster Manual II without magic...

New Legends & Lore: Player vs. Character

I can throw the interpersonal and search skills out of 4e and be happy. So I would say that it supports both styles, if not obviously and not officially. Something more official would be better. It's kind of like removing magic items. There are official rules for that (inherent bonuses), I...

New Legends & Lore: Player vs. Character

I think it is very subjective, but I know when I'm having fun and when I'm not. Rolling to answer a riddle is not fun to me. Rolling to hit a demon in combat is fun. Your reversed game would not hold my attention for very long. For example, imagine playing Trivial Pursuit. I do this...

New Legends & Lore: Player vs. Character

We appreciate your concern about the players at our table. Have you considered that there might be a player that prefers our style at yours?

New Legends & Lore: Player vs. Character

Fun. We find it more fun to have randomness and a chance of failure in combat or something dangerous like a jump over a ravine. Also, these things are harder to describe. "I search the statue" is an easy substitute for "I roll a 18 search" "You found a secret panel in the statue". I don't...
