    Yet another "4.0 impressions" thread

It was aesthetic shock therapy for me, however, to look at the covers and then open up the books. Most of the interior art was fine...didn't care to much for the cover art.

    4.5E: When?

Imagine that. Criticizing a game system. What a nightmare it must be to get a game system and then immediately experience painful urges for some sort of revised version of it.

    Yet another "4.0 impressions" thread

I'm glad you enjoy it! Honestly...I have my own opinions about it that are negative, but that's my preference. Best of luck to you!

    What Makes 4E Different?

For me? It's not D&D. Must I accept it as such because cunning capitalists claim it is?

Because they are roles that relate to combat. That is how they are defined. A "striker," "defender," "controller," and "leader" where combat is concerned. If it is thematic at all, it is only such in relation to combat. What I liked about previous editions was that the class, and its name...

I second that. And they can rely on this assumption, too, as people will buy the product simply because WotC have annexed "D&D" to it. I returned mine to my bookstore. They asked, "And why do you wish to return this product?" I replied, "I thought it was D&D."

Pramas on 4E and New Gamers

The paradox of 4E is that any gain of new players will be significantly offset by the loss of much of its original fan base. I don't even recognize "Dungeons & Dragons" anymore.

Nostalgic for basic D&D or AD&D?

Amen! Treebore, was is the relationship between TL, C&C, and Gary Gygax? I noted he'd authored the PDF on multi-/dual-classing, et al. for C&C. Was that Gygax's system of choice before he passed?

You don't like the new edition? Tell me about it!

My wallet spoke twice. I bought the 4E books from my bookstore. I returned them later, and re-purchased my 3.5 books. Edit: This is all so disheartening, you know. I remember how elated so many of us were back in 2000/1 upon hearing of the approaching 3E. I've been playing D&D since the...

You don't like the new edition? Tell me about it!

Not if, as game master, you specify at the outset that you'll only be using certain rules, or rulebooks. I spend a heck of a lot of time building my own world, and I really don't too much care for marketing analysts out there indirectly trying to inflate it with their fluff by drafting catchy...

Steve Jobs takes over as WotC CEO!

You should also check out the movie, Pirates of Silicon Valley. Someone uploaded it to YouTube in full, if you're interested.

Nostalgic for basic D&D or AD&D?

That's great, Clavis! Hearing accounts such as this make me happy that I elected to heed the castle's call and go on the crusade! The "reason" to get it, I think, is the fact that it is a single (only 2 book) game system that quite easily, as you know, bridges various editions. It is very...

Steve Jobs takes over as WotC CEO!

Steve Jobs: "What is this, that I keep hearing about you developing...What do you call it?! Windows!" Bill Gates: "I'm not stealing from you, Steve. So don't even start that. 'Windows' is a 1st level Wizard spell; it can only summon imps and quasits...no where near the power of 'Gate'!"

Nostalgic for basic D&D or AD&D?

The Castle Keeper's Guide, as I understand it, is slated for release this year. Could be wrong, but that is what I've read. I am piecing together my own class system for my C&C campaign that is actually a conversion of materials from the old Bard Games supplements from the early 80s: Compleat...

Nostalgic for basic D&D or AD&D?

Absolutely! What prompted me to purchase it was the 1E "feel" coupled with much more streamlined rules. It presents everything needed to play in two nice hardcover books. And it is backwards compatible...those who'd like to have a condensed, simplified OD&D-like rules system can get it in C&C...

Nostalgic for basic D&D or AD&D?

I have noted in several posts that some individuals are electing to return to older versions of D&D and AD&D. Reasons are multi-faceted, but there is a generalized sense of nostalgia for "simpler" times. May I appeal to this select group of fellow gamers by suggesting the Troll Lords game...

    Poll: 1E or 2E?

Good question. May I recommend Troll Lords Castles & Crusades? The authors had sentiments very much like yours! They were very nostalgic for 1E, but desired a smooth system with quick resolution mechanisms. So, they streamlined D&D 3.5 and repackaged it, under OGL of course, within an...

You don't like the new edition? Tell me about it!

Yes... Hi, Turanil. First of all, I just wanted to say that I read your review of Troll Lords game system, Castles & Crusades. I actually just purchased the PHB and M&T, having downloaded the "condensed" PDF and liked it. I love 3.5, especially its multi-classing system, but I won't be going...

Now that 4e is out, are you into it or sticking with a prior edition?

Both, actually! Well, in a sense. I have decided to use the Troll Lords game system, Castles & Crusades. I downloaded the PDF "condensed" version of the C&C PhB yesterday, and was sufficiently impressed. It uses OD&D flavor, even some rules, with very, very streamlined versions of D&D 3/3.5...

    4E "Multi-classing": Someone please explain

Thanks Thanks. I've looked seriously at 4E in the past few days. I actually just ordered Troll Lord's "Castles and Crusades" d20 game. It may actually turn out to be even more palatable to me than 3.5.
