    Whamageddon (Last) Christmas

Good luck with that! They’re safely tucked away in their case.

    Whamageddon (Last) Christmas

Nope, I’ve been pretty careful. I even took the precaution of removing it from my Christmas music playlist earlier in the month. I absolutely did get lucky at the shops, but they’re all closed now. The chances of me hearing that song in the next hour is negligible.

    Whamageddon (Last) Christmas

It’s 10:30 pm on Christmas Eve, and we don’t have any music playing. I think I’ll be OK.

    Whamageddon (Last) Christmas

No, it’s not “suddenly” all about the lyrics. It was only ever about the lyrics. I specifically was commenting on what the song was “about” – e.g. its subject matter, aka its lyrics. I survived! Only heard covers.

    Whamageddon (Last) Christmas

I’m far from being the first to criticize the lyrics of that song. So much so that, as I pointed out, even its creator describes it as being one of the worst songs ever. Not sure why I’m being singled out here for expressing a common opinion. It’s on mine …

    Whamageddon (Last) Christmas

I mean, Sir Bob has said that he is "responsible for two of the worst songs in history: 'Do They Know it's Christmas?' [and] 'We are the World'". I don’t think it’s churlish to criticize the song’s awful lyrics just because it was used to raise a lot of money for charity. “It was for a good...

What are you reading in 2025?

My mother sent me a novel my cousin wrote set in Armenia during the war with Azerbaijan in the 90s. It's called Mountains on Fire. It's pretty good so far. (I am most of the way through.)

    Whamageddon (Last) Christmas

Do They Know It's Christmas? isn't a Beatles song. It's that awful Band Aid "supergroup" song from the 80s. The one about how we should feel bad for the Africans while we party because they don't have any water other than their tears and won't get any snow at Christmas and the only present...

    Whamageddon (Last) Christmas

Which is worse? Wonderful Christmastime or Do They Know It's Christmas? I would argue that the former, while banal, is nowhere near as tone deaf or cringey as the latter.

Now that I've logged 68 hours with DA: Veilguard, I would like to confirm my initial assessments: it is very much a Dragon Age game, but more specifically, it is very much a successor to DA2 rather than DA:O or DA:I (even if the latter's protagonist shows up several times in DA:V). Having...

    Whamageddon (Last) Christmas

I survived another shopping trip! I feel like there aren't as many shops playing Christmas music this year.

James Ohlen Shifts From Archetype Entertainment Head to Creative Consultant for Tabletop RPGs at Wizards

I have mixed feelings about this announcement. Dragon Age is one of my favorite fantasy franchises, so all respect to Ohlen for his work there ... however, based on the deeply flawed Odyssey of the Dragonlords, I am of the opinion that Ohlen's CRPG writing skills don't translate that well to...

It's not about copyright. It's about cultural appropriation. These taonga (treasures) have lots of meaning and history for the descendants of the people who created them. To be inspired by them and create original works in the game would be one thing, but to literally copy real existing taonga...

I’ve not played either Path of Exile game, but this is disappointing news coming from NZ’s only (?) internationally successful gaming company: how cultural erasure occurs: why nz game removing maori carvings They really should have known better.

I'm still in the running, but I've got a work Christmas lunch later and then I have to take one of my daughters to do more Christmas shopping, so ... fingers crossed

Fingers crossed I have found a fix for my DA: Veilguard stuttering issue! When I explained to Google's AI Mode that my BIOS seems too rudimentary to undervolt/underclock my CPU by specific values*, it suggested I go into Windows power management and set the CPU's minimum usage to 80% and the max...

    Whamageddon (Last) Christmas

Me neither! I'm rather surprised. I've been to the mall numerous times this month. I heard a cover on my previous visit to the physio, but this morning they weren't even playing Christmas music.
