Is Time Travel (going backwards) Possible?

How the hell did this post not get struck by lightening immediately?

    A different apocalypse scenario

Can't XP you, so: Hilarious! Here's another: ENWorld turns into one gigantic freakin' ad. There is no longer any content, just things to click on that send you to places you don't want to go to buy things you don't want and/or can't afford. We are all separated and can no longer war over which...

Any Traveller RPG (Mongoose version) fans here?

    Operation: Power Level Gary

Frickin' A. It's been a while, but another egg has been laid.

    Why can't I save edits?

I'm not 100% sure what you mean. There is always a stationary ad at the top of the page, and another, somewhat animated visit-out-sponsor ad on the right side of the page. Edit: Checking to see if Go Advanced does the trick.

    Why can't I save edits?

I just tried to edit the post above. I let it think about it while I prepared and ate breakfast, which took at least 15 minutes. I reloaded the page thinking maybe it worked but wasn't showing on the screen. Nope.

    Chrome or Safari, same result.

    Why can't I save edits?

Every time I edit a post and click save, the little spinning-wheel-of-wait spins for eternity. Do I have bad karma?

But, but, but...then the game wouldn't have a unified mechanic! [pant crappage]

Whats with all the porno-MMO ads?

Janx, you just became my favorite poster on ENWorld for the following quotes: "I don't go to MMO sites or naughty sites. That's how your PC gets AIDS." and "I've no interest in exposing my PC to whatever malware hell awaits at a Roman Orgy MMO." Outstanding.

    Knowledge check pile ons (d20)

To the OP: Bring a water pistol to your next session. Next time this happens, bust out the water pistol and squirt the offending player(s) in the face. After an indeterminate period of awkward and stunned silence, carry on as if nothing had happened. Repeat as needed until the offending behavior...

Why do you like to play?

Because I also like to drink beer. It's easier to play and drink beer than it is to DM and drink beer.

    Being Chased in a Maze

Do NOT do any mapping for the PCs. Any time the PCs move within the maze, you simply say, "You are in a maze of twisty little passages, all alike." If you wanna be old school: Every once in a while, have a thief wander by, but make it clear that if they attack the thief, they'll probably die.

Dice statistics help - chase odds?

The probability that your example occurs is zero! In any case, I see the objection now. Since this is not a math forum, I equated "zero probability" with "impossible." (While "impossible" implies "zero probability," the converse does not, in general, hold.) I should have said, "Actually, almost...

Dice statistics help - chase odds?

The supremum of a set of finite numbers need not be finite. While there is no "longest game," that doesn't mean that an infinitely-long game is possible! Can you give an example of a scenario that does not complete in finite time?

Dice statistics help - chase odds?

Actually, it could be a practical concern, and this concern is the reason I mentioned it. (And didn't realize the possible confusion until after re-reading the last few posts.) The fact that the game will end in finite time with probability one means that there won't be any "loops," such as one...

Dice statistics help - chase odds?

Indeed, the probability that the game will require at least t rounds goes to zero as t goes to infinity. It's relatively easy (with matrix methods) to calculate the probability that the game with require at least t rounds, so one could use that to get a better understanding of "how long?" questions.

Dice statistics help - chase odds?

I calculated a variance (in the "fair" case) of about 53, so one should expect the majority of games to take less than, say, 15-20 rounds.

Dice statistics help - chase odds?

I just realized how silly it was to consider the 1/3 probability case for each direction. As was suggested, the correct calculation is with 1/20 for a tied result. In this case, the expected time to absorption is 180/19, which is approximately 9.47 -- nice intuition, Octangula!

Dice statistics help - chase odds?

Ooh, Markov Chains -- my favorite! Indeed, each side is equally likely to win (assuming they start tied); and if equal rolls are not allowed, then the "expected time to absorption" into one of the winning states is 9 turns. If we allow for ties, but otherwise moving "up," "down," or "staying...
