An Unexpected Victory, Unconditional Surrender, and Unfinished Business.

I see it this way. There are two 'bodies' to the OGL, like there were two bodies to medieval kings. The first body is the license itself. Yes, this body is living and breathing as it has for the past 23 years. The second body is the trust created from 23 years of continuous, non-messed-with...

Hello, I am lawyer with a PSA: almost everyone is wrong about the OGL and SRD. Clearing up confusion.

To echo Hussar and S'mon, this thread has been by far the most informative thing I've read on a message board in a long, long time. joe b.

WotC Backs Down: Original OGL To Be Left Untouched; Whole 5E Rules Released as Creative Commons

Is Strahd trademarked? I did a quick search but didn't find him (but it was a quick search). joe b.

WotC Backs Down: Original OGL To Be Left Untouched; Whole 5E Rules Released as Creative Commons

The name is usable, as is the fact that he's a vampire, but that's it. All the other stuff we associate with him are not open. But the name and the vampire bit are very important. joe b.

WotC Backs Down: Original OGL To Be Left Untouched; Whole 5E Rules Released as Creative Commons

For me, sadly, literally all of them at this point. Yes, that's extreme, but the past month has been extreme. These concerns can be addressed by WotC by creating an 1.4 OGL that is a copy of 1.0a but includes additional verbiage about it being irrevocable and non-unathorizable. joe b.

WotC Backs Down: Original OGL To Be Left Untouched; Whole 5E Rules Released as Creative Commons

Not that I can see. I'd like them to legally address the "unauthorize" issue as well as the "revocable" issue, but given what they just went through, realistically, I don't see them trying to mess with the 1.0a in the future, especially considering that everything was Creative Commons'ed anyway...

WotC Backs Down: Original OGL To Be Left Untouched; Whole 5E Rules Released as Creative Commons

There are a lot more SRD's than just the 5.1 version, so the 1.0a OGL remains important. joe b.

Yep. The only way to win a door-in-the-face negotiation is to change the terms entirely. Everyone changed the terms. joe b.

    Legal Discussion of OGL 1.2

You can redistribute the exact file as WotC expressly provides you that permission in the first paragraph of the file: (WotC: Permission to copy, modify and distribute the files collectively known as the System Reference Document 5.1 (“SRD5”) is granted solely through the use of the Open Gaming...

My thoughts on the new OGL v1.2 draft

The d20 System Trademark License. It was done for many years. The morality "reason" of why there needs to be a 1.2 is fallacious. joe b.

    Legal Discussion of OGL 1.2

Today at my blog I've published the Open Gaming Bible II containing open material for fantasy, modern, and future gaming. (Edit: I have also decided to accept WotC's offer regarding the 5.1 SRD via the 1.0a OGL.) joe b.

OGL 1.2 survey is now live

If they want feedback, they'll listen to everyone. If they don't want feedback, they won't listen to everyone. The choice is theirs, as it always has been. Hearing "They leave the 1.0 OGL alone, they can go ruin 1D&D all they like." is a message they should definitely want to listen to. joe b.
