5E: Monstrous Arthropods for Fifth Edition

How's this Description Dire mosquitoes are monstrous insects that can be as big as a horse, although their slender bodies and limbs make them far lighter. A female dire mosquito looks just like an ordinary blood-sucking mosquito apart from the size, with a body length from 9 to 12 feet. A male...

Updating the Female Dire Mosquito Working Draft. So it's just the Description to do and we can start on the males.

5E: Monstrous Arthropods for Fifth Edition

Oh, and the original monster was slower in the air than a Giant Horsefly so I'd make it Speed 15 ft., fly 50 ft. Putting that together and updating the Female Dire Mosquito Working Draft.

I'm also thinking of increasing the Hit Dice a tad since the original monster had 7 HD (Culex) or 8 HD (Anopheles, which is more than an AD&D Giant Scorpion. In 2E AD&D 8 Hit Dice averages 36 hit points while 5+5 HD averages 27.5 hp. A 5E Giant Scorpion has 52 (7d10 + 14) so if the mosquito has...

5E: Monstrous Arthropods for Fifth Edition

I'm thinking about removing the "from the target" from "after it drains ## hit points of blood from the target" since the dire mosquito could drink her fill from multiple targets. Maybe make it:  The mosquito can end the grapple by spending 5 feet of its movement. It does so after the target...

Completed Creatures Index & Current Conversions

The Bog Golem in Return to White Plume Mountain is just a Clay Golem with one very minor tweaks to the stats: its Armour Class is 6 rather than 7.

Converting monsters from Tales From The Infinite Staircase

Oh, before I go any further are we naming this Dark Dweller Portion like the Cleon Special, since the original monster was a "Single Portion of the Dark Dweller"?

Converting monsters from Tales From The Infinite Staircase

Fine by me. I'll add those bits from the Cleon Special Dark Dweller Portion to the Dark Dweller Working Draft.

5E: Monstrous Arthropods for Fifth Edition

Okay. Before we get to into that, I'm thinking we shouldn't use the Stirge's Blood Drain description as-is. The dire mosquito is the size of a horse. It's not a tiny thing that "attaches to the target" but will probably be bigger than the thing it's feeding from, so I'd treat is as a grapple...

    Converting Oriental Adventures creatures

No, there's piles more weird spooks and haunts in that adventure, although many of them have very minimal stats and descriptions. Did I make a list of them somewhere in this thread? If not, I'd better post one. These things happen.

5E: Monstrous Arthropods for Fifth Edition

Anyhow, getting back to the Female Dire Mosquito Working Draft. Your current rough draft is. That looks too close to the Giant Horsefly we used as a base. I'd lower the DEX to say the 14 of a Giant Wasp and I think its INT ought to be 1 not 2. The listed Hit Points of 60 (8d10 + 24) is...

5E: Monstrous Arthropods for Fifth Edition

That's a lot bigger than the ones in Dungeon #41. Those had a six to eight inch wingspan, so are about the same size as a robin. They're comparable to a normal Bat, Scorpion or Spider in Fifth Edition SRD terms.

5E: Monstrous Arthropods for Fifth Edition

The "Female Dire Mosquito" is the Challenge 3 one. As well as the Polyhedron Large monsters there's also a Dungeon adventure with Tiny Giant Mosquitos I fancy converting, since they'd be a suitable basis for a Swarm. We can worry about those later though.
