D&D General Dice Fudging and Twist Endings

So I am generally anti-fudging - I roll out in the open, and will often communicate the AC after the first few rounds (or after a PC hits it) or something. But I wanted to throw out something to get a perspective on where this hits on fudging. If a character is attacking the last foe in an...

D&D General How would you redo 4e?

I'd go one step further and draw a distinction between figuring out the most optimal response to a situation, and making the decision to commit to that optimal response knowing that it may cost me an optimal response later. Both can scratch the itch, and in different ways, but I think there is...

D&D General How would you redo 4e?

This is coming from my specific playstyle, but - I like having some form of limited resources because it lets me make more decisions. If my best strategy is always available, then there is less problem solving. If I want to feel creative, I need there to be costs between things - a reason to...

D&D General How would you redo 4e?

Paladins get fighting styles as well, and then some other always on abilities - like divine health, protective auras, as well as improved smite for always on radiant damage. Which, that is scaled out from levels - but the fact that it also gets what fighters get makes that more functional.

D&D General How would you redo 4e?

So far, I have been planning to have the hexes as partial walls as a place to use cover or squeezing, to make mobility a bit more.

D&D General How would you redo 4e?

One thing that I realized while prepping for savage worlds - I would probably move to using Hexes by default, if I were redoing 4e.

D&D General How would you redo 4e?

I would look to remove things with small, conditional bonuses. I would go for bonuses either being small and static (+1 to hit with longswords) or large and dynamic. And cut down on dynamic bonuses - the memory issues posed by remembering the number of dynamic bonuses or effects in place is...

D&D General Iconic and Best Adventures in each Edition

As someone who only had preboxed adventures started in 3e: Non-Starters: 3e: Red Hand of Doom - had a great blend and fun challenges, and had a real threat. A lot of my campaigns 4e: King of Trollhaunt Warrens - had a really fun, psudo-faerie feeling to it that I enjoyed. I liked the use of...

D&D General Essential supplements for each edition

For 4e, Heroes of the Feywild and Heroes of the Elemental Chaos were both essential to me. I actually prefer them to the 2nd PHB (more or less). They were some of the last books made, and they worked really well as expansions for the pre-essentials game.

D&D 5E [+] Explain RPG theory without using jargon

I want to try a specific attempt at describing some RPG theory/terms without jargon - I am curious at how this one reads: Exception Based Rules Design When you are making the game, you give the player a broad set of rules that apply to the whole game system. However, you also specify that...

D&D 5E 5E Healing Surges - Do You Use Them?

It generally hasn't impacted it that much for me. My players tend to choose racing the enemy down rather then backing up and healing a lot of times. But if they are in a defensive position, like behind cover, they can rally more. So it tends to keep them a bit more mobile and looking for...

    [4e] Broken World Campaign pitch

Looking for players for a new game. Right now the time slot is 7-11 EST on Saturdays, ruleset being 4e. Here is the pitch: The Breaking of the Old World Almost a millenniaago, the Eladrin Empire began. Like manycountries, who they were and what they were evolved with time, but in the...

    Thoughts on Multiclassing

One perspective I have is this - a level isn't a level, a level is just a cache of experience. Lets assume that we are talking about 3e. So our level 6 fighter has 15K Experience, and needs 21K to level; so a delta of 6K. He achieves that 6K, but instead of learning how to fight, he invests...

What ideas from 13th Age are people using for dnd?

For "simple" games, like 5e wants to be, I have used their background load out of skills. For "Complex" games, like 4e, I sometimes use their movement/engaged rules if I don't want to graph it out.

D&D 5E Is DnD next chasing a pipedream?

For rating the 4e/Vorthos relationship, I have found 4e to weirdly be the system that works best if you don't know the rules - because each power is self containted and works on its own. A lot of people I play with barely know the rules, outside of "Standard, Move, Minor" "Red, Green, Black" and...

One of the best parts of 5e thus far is that people are already homebrewing.

Lets say playable means in specific that the game can be played with the default design assumptions of the developers - Dread can be played for single horror scenarios, and that is fine, and Vampire stuff lets you play a vampire and work fine. In this case, specifically, I would think that with...

One of the best parts of 5e thus far is that people are already homebrewing.

My groups (all of the three ones that I drift through) basically have this perspective - We -can- houserule any system in to playability. Most of us don't have the time to do so. The game should accept houseruling (like D&D always has, in every edition, forever and ever amen), yes; but it...

D&D 5E With Respect to the Door and Expectations....The REAL Reason 5e Can't Unite the Base

So, this is a bit of a thread shift, but another thread made me think of it. 4e is cried as being the "Rules" over "Story" edition by some people. It is also cried as being "Narrativist" vs. "Simulationist." How does that parse? It is a narrative game that ignores story? I'm not trying to...

The Gate instead of the Door

This question keeps me up at night. I think it is just rolling some dice and knifing some dutes.

D&D 5E With Respect to the Door and Expectations....The REAL Reason 5e Can't Unite the Base

I wonder if we can't say: "I don't like the AEDU structure" and leave out the dissociated mechanics. I don't think you can make AEDU be made "Associated" since it is representing Outcomes and not Process. My take from Skyrim: If my character has 100 mana (or stamina) and casts a spell...
