    DriveThruRPG's New AI-Content Filter

Long time reader, lurker and supporter of ENWorld. Probably like the majority of visitors though, just not very vocal.

    DriveThruRPG's New AI-Content Filter

Sooner or later everyone will be dragged kicking and screaming into the AI art future. AI is a tool, not unlike a paintbrush in some ways, and the primary complaint that it plagiarizes other artists without permission is like saying anyone who sees a Picasso and then paints a picture is...

Greyhawk: why is Starday called "Star"-day?

Trying to make up a calendar for a home-brew setting, and in looking at other fantasy calendars this thought occurred to me. Starday is found in several fantasy calendars, but none describe exactly why or how it came to be called that.

    Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder outsold D&D by 2:1 in 2013

As a player and a GM in both a PF and a D&D campaign, I can say that regardless of whether I buy 5e or not, I'm not going to change the game I'm playing for a long time. Plus, like a great many I plan to hold off from buying 5e until I see what the early adopters have to say about it. These are...

    Heinsoo on Alignment & Rebranding

Hmm so it seems that having an alignment that is essentially "none" would only work in a game system where your alignment doesn't really mean much, like 4e's is "about as meaningful as your eye color". That also means that you could never use it in the standard 3x3 alignment grid either. Either...

    Heinsoo on Alignment & Rebranding

Quite coincidentally, I was reading the book "Cheers, Gary" (a collection of ENWorld forum posts by Gary Gygax published in book form - you can read them yourself here: http://www.enworld.org/forum/showthread.php?22566-Q-amp-A-with-Gary-Gygax-Part-I) tonight and found this question asked of Gary...

    Heinsoo on Alignment & Rebranding

I don't know much about 4e, but what's the difference between unaligned and neutral? Choosing an alignment that's not an alignment just sounds munchkin to me. I know a guy who runs his 3.5 game with no alignments. It works for him most of the time but it takes constant reworking of the rules...

    Heinsoo on Alignment & Rebranding

Not sure if this is just a bad example but I don't see any problem with the alignment system. The problem in the example has more to do with poor story writing by the GM than with the alignment system. Why does the kings new wife have to be a succubus? Why does it have to be a secret? Who is it...

    Resilient Sphere underwater

I think you're confusing "make sense" with "be realistic". The two are not the same. Imagine what it'd be like to play in a D&D game that didn't make sense. Now imagine one that isn't realistic. See the difference? I had fun imagining games that don't make sense, it was amusing so thanks for that.

    Resilient Sphere underwater

Yes, this is the heart of my questions. I think simply saying "go with what the spell says" may not be suitable for every circumstance. I'm not saying every answer must be clear and concise and make perfect sense, but this spell does leave a bit of info about it's intended result out of it's...

    Resilient Sphere underwater

Couple questions for the hive mind about Resilient Sphere. If you cast it under water, can you breathe normally, or is it filled with water? The spell description says you can breathe normally but I see room for interpretation. What if you fell into a lake of lava and casted it?

    PC sacrifice encounter

I've found it incredibly difficult to make a Player want to sacrifice their PC for any reason, no matter what's at stake, and I've had games where the players would eagerly sacrifice themselves for each other. I think the best way to get there is to make the stakes something very personal to the...

    character portraits

I've been looking around for someone to make a character portrait. I found www.avatarart.com but it appears defunct, no updates since 2010 and the contact page is broken. Does anyone know where to go for professional character portraits these days? Scott

D&D 5E Changes with Equipment, Weapons, Armor.

It would be nice to include all the different types of weapons and at the same time make them different enough to merit a separate line on the table. I think what gets in the way of that is not the weapons or their properties or historical uses, but the game mechanics. If I had a dollar for...

D&D 5E Changes with Equipment, Weapons, Armor.

I don't have the latest Next rules in front of me, but in 3.5 the first word of the Whip description says "A whip deals nonlethal damage." It is slashing damage, but it's nonlethal slashing damage. Maybe it's changed in the latst Next rules though.

D&D 5E Changes with Equipment, Weapons, Armor.

I think this would only work if the whip deals lethal damage, which in 3.x at least, it doesn't.

D&D 5E Changes with Equipment, Weapons, Armor.

Rr One of the problems I always have with armor and weapons in D&D is my knowledge of real medieval armor and weapons. Banded armor is not real. Sure, there have been armors that consisted of mainly horizontal plates (roman lorica segmenta) but there is no historical evidence of banded mail...

Top Ten D&D Settings of ALL TIME!

Awesome poll Morrus, thanks for posting it. Great results. And I think it's interesting how many comments say they are both surprised and agree with the results.
