How do you deal with Hardness 20? (Spoilers for The Infernal Syndrome)

Given he mentions four mercies he's probably level 12-15...

Is a creature too powerful ?

What armour is he wearing? Two weapons is the most fragile choice of all IMO, which likely doesn't help, but even so... he must have massive dexterity to even qualify for it so his AC can't be that bad presumably.

Pathfinder 1E Making my Pathfinder Paladin interesting.

Sounds fun. Conflicting obligations or temptation is pretty much the cornerstone of most paladin stories I think.

    Why not monks?

Well, I remade the guy as a level 11 monk, and lost the whip due to me being in error. He took fury's fall instead of exotic weapon proficiency whip, and perfect strike at level 11, and uses a +3 kama. His CMB with a trip is going to be 11 (level 11 monk) 6 (strength) 3 (dex) 2 (improved...

    Why not monks?

Okay, I made a proper sheet for a level 11 monk as we're almost level 11, and grovelled permission from my DM to try him out for one adventure instead of my usual char as a test run on how crap monks are. We shall see. :)

    Why not monks?

Actually the whip isn't that good. I see it'd have to be a kusarigama instead... But that's no great loss, it has the advantage of being a monk weapon.

    Why not monks?

It's not an unusual campaign. Lots of published adventures. We did Castle Ravenloft as the last big plot arc, Count Strahd et al, doesn't get much more boilerplate D&D than that. He'd have been fine in Castle Ravenloft, I have no doubt. Almost everything in it is humanoid, most of the...

    Why not monks?

I dunno, most of the time we fight classed humanoids, not monsters at all, and monks are very good against them. Against your fighter as statted, and not for arenas - why would he be, the monk wasnt - the monk would probably kick his ass, dependent on what other stuff he had going for him. An...

    Why not monks?

I think having to use an amulet of mighty fists instead of a magic weapon - ie the errata on brass knuckles - is pointlessly sadistic. So I'd probably houserule that they can indeed use brass knucks. Though you can always use a monk weapon, thats a bit of a copout.

    Why not monks?

Well thats a bit of an arse. I would say its still good though. We tend to be fighting evil stuff a lot, so holy is kinda akin to bane, except evil alignment is far far more common then the various bane subtypes. In any case its a distraction - theres a character with a lot of attacks there...

How do your rogues get their sneak attacks in?

It is presumptuous to assume someone who disagrees does not understand. I understand If your party is Fighter, Rogue, Healer, Barbarian, then Tier 4 or 5 is going to be the best. If your party is Sorcerer, Beguiler, Crusader, Swordsage, then Tier 2-3 will be best. perfectly, and think it's...

    Why not monks?

I think I have to remind, as we get distracted by the minutiae of artificial arena battles, that I'm not trying to prove monks are The Badass. I don't think I have to, though. These guys look pretty comparable to the cavalier and paladin in my own TT group. YMMV I guess, depends on magic...

How do your rogues get their sneak attacks in?

Thats pretty cool. Tier is kinda lame IMHO, and usually fairly artificial in actual play I think. You don't generally fight in an arena against other PC-like characters. certainly it shouldn't be much of a factor when choosing a character. Are you able to contribute somehow and are you...

    Why not monks?

I would assume that you can use a move action as another swift action if you wanted, but that would imply just an attack action. So if you wanted to 'clam up' you would do that. As for other ki actions, with a monk like this, I'd recommend a qigong monk, so the usual ki pool powers (which are...

    Why not monks?

Well, depending on what he does with his actions. Could be 2. But yes. That hardly makes him bad, though. He'd eat a bebilith for breakfast I think. Against an iron golem, having 1 (or 2, if the monk refrains from a flurry) of the golems attacks miss is probably better than most other...

    Why not monks?

Here's another level 10 monk which kicks a lot of azz. Same attributes for ease. This one ideally wants higher wisdom but lower dexterity however so you could juggle for full twinkage. 1 Snake Style, power attack, combat reflexes 2 Improved grapple 3 Skill focus sense motive 5 Weapon focus...

    Why not monks?

Well, you got a guy pretty solidly specced for armour class, wiuth more magic items than an NPC would likely have, clamming up completely there, to the point of essentially taking him out of the fight. All the fighter is doing is occupying a space (which the monk can probably tumble past...

Having trouble scaling encounters to make them challenging

Indeed. It looks like almost all the damage being dished out is physical damage, so armour class and debuffs to +hit are going to help a lot. I think 25 is surely the minimum this guy can possibly have anyway, unless he's purposefully gimped himself. It wouldn't take a whole bunch of effort...

Having trouble scaling encounters to make them challenging

A wolverine with augment summoning has +6 to hit. Bard song is stopped by silence, flanking is stopped by bodyguards/a wall. Cannon fodder is the most important bit of all. A 5th level fighter with AC 32 would be perfect. :p

Having trouble scaling encounters to make them challenging

oh and CR for xp and such, I'm amazed anybody uses those rules. I've played RPG for years and never in one group ever did the xp for monsters get formally worked out. Their estimates are either terrible or they assume very un-optimised characters. EIther way, if you're going to houserule...
