    Main reason? a^2 + b^2 = c^2 + 2*a*b*cos(C), where C is the angle between sides a and b. Simply put, if you ignore the rule while on a grid, you could actually move FARTHER than what you're supposed to.

That's why I prefer the chi/rho method (which is part of the Character EL/CR calculator) since 2 CR8 (which can be slightly harder than a single CR10 creature) gets slightly more, 960 per character for 2 CR8...

    I think the paladin deserves a small bonus to his XP. He took the unfavorable route based on his alignment and code of conduct (to the bane of the rest of the party). And since they survived, perhaps the group gains half or quarter xp from it? As for the other, they overcame the challenge.
