    Actual Play podcasts

I've been listening to several of these podcasts that were recommended and while entertaining, I just can't get over the fact that they're pretty much all a hard M or R in their content rating. Perhaps I'm just a prude, though. I like how Crit Juice implemented a sort of listener...

    Lol. I appreciate your candor.

Yea, I haven't heard of any either (but I also haven't tried too hard to find any). We tried to get some of that in our own podcast, spending time to discussing the WotC material at end of sessions or campaign itself, but most of it is playing (goofing off?).

What do you mean? Like podcasts talking about D&D, but not playing it?

There are good points being made all around. I may have muddied the waters a bit when I asked what could make my podcast better when the very answer to that is highly subjective.

Good point. So either keep it to AP as much as possible or categorize it as something else (I.E. Friends Hanging Out and Mostly Play D&D)

Ok, I see what you mean now. I guess some of that could just be dependent upon the audience, though. Like if we went off on a tangent discussing video games some people would tune out because that's not their thing but then others might find it really interesting. WHY CAN'T WE PLEASE EVERYONE? ;)

This is interesting. From your experience with the various APPs, can you give some examples of how they failed to do this and what you think they could have done differently? I don't have a lot of experience either way, expect as a player, so I'm having a hard time thinking of how this would...

    Actual Play podcasts

True. I think a lot of the stuff that we have edited out has been either 1) potentially offensive comments (hasn't been too many of those) and 2) downtime when we end up researching rules, leveling up or our DM had to read up on the material (because we were attempting a low-prep play-through of...

Oh yea, what does everyone think about players talking "in character" with "acting" vs speaking as character without acting vs speaking in third person? Do you prefer one over the other? Does it just depend on if the player is good at it or it is interesting?

Since you are all pretty familiar with the various AP podcasts, I'd love your feedback on how to improve our own. You won't offend me if you think it's just garbage, just let me know. Like I said before, first season starts off rough with audio quality and the episodes are session-length...

Ha! Me too. I think we will definitely start release as shorter episodes in season two. More digestible.

Also, What kind of episode release length do you prefer? Each episode is length of session (like 3 hours or so)? Or always set length (like maybe 1 hour per episode)?

This excellent info, guys. To be honest, I'm part of an APP. We do it mainly for fun, there's no monetization involved. We have done one full season (playing through Princes of the Apocalypse and offering our opinions on it, as a product, during and after). It wasn't until halfway through the...

Matthan, I agree about live streams, I definitely don't have the time. I like podcasts that I can listen to while I work or drive. Regarding combat, it's definitely hard to keep it entertaining, especially when you get to higher level play and there can be more drawn-out fights. After 10, 20...

wedgeski, 4. Indeed. Sometimes it's hard to get around the "nerds doing math" portions of combat-heavy scenarios, even if they try hard to narrate and add flavor. 5. Yes, it seems a hard balance to strike. Good point. Iserith, 2. Thanks! I give this one a try. 3. It's definitely hard when...

Thorgrit, 2. Will have to check that one out. Thanks! 3. Good point about volume. 4. I agree, can be difficult to follow or be engaged when not part of the game. Any thoughts on how the podcasters could potentially keep an audience more engaged?

    Actual Play podcasts

I'm interested to know peoples' preferences/opinions on Actual Play podcasts: Do you listen to them? If so, which ones do you listen to? Do you prefer professional (highly edited, high sound quality, music, effects, etc)? Or more low-tech/amateur (limited editing, standard audio quality...
