A discussion of metagame concepts in game design

This thread could work perfectly as the origin story for a Frenzied Berserker.

A discussion of metagame concepts in game design

A character being able to survive 10-15 direct hits a day and becoming capable of withstanding inordinate amounts of punishment as he becomes more competent IS the overtly gamist mechanics.

A discussion of metagame concepts in game design

I think your problem is that you need to look for really, really simple games that limit player choices as much as they can. Everytime a player gets to choose a different type of action you basically create a potential disconnect between player and character because the character may not be as...

ZEITGEIST Of iron, wood and flesh - a 4E ZEITGEIST chronicle

Yes, I plan to play out his relationship with Gale, and knowing the guy who plays it, he's going to try to infiltrate the cult anyways, so he can pick up the roleplaying threads as a double agent.

ZEITGEIST Of iron, wood and flesh - a 4E ZEITGEIST chronicle

It still works if you have a running sub (and since they introduced the 5E online tools, you can resub for the 4E ones too). ddi.wizards.com still has everything. Of course Zeitgeist material has to be updated manually.

ZEITGEIST Of iron, wood and flesh - a 4E ZEITGEIST chronicle

Also, I think the Vekeshi mystic theme is one of the hardest to integrate (the Docker theme is a tough one also, even if it's too awesome to pass). The player guide sells it as some sort of stonemasonry association with a strong edonistic side, but in the actual story (as far as I got) they're...

ZEITGEIST Of iron, wood and flesh - a 4E ZEITGEIST chronicle

It was the Danoran tiefling general who pretended to be the guy who killed him, right? I suggested the theme to Boyd's player but he wasn't really interest. I think the guy who plays Bruce may "double dip" (in roleplay terms) in that part of the story.

ZEITGEIST Of iron, wood and flesh - a 4E ZEITGEIST chronicle

This concludes the party's backstories. Next, the diary of the first two gameplay sessions!

Boyd Wittwicked Risuri Human Skald, Docker theme Age: 32 Stats: Str: 7 Con: 11 Dex: 15 Int: 16 Wis: 15 Cha: 20 Boyd's story could be that of too many young men caught in the cogs of Flint's industrial revolution. Orphaned in young age, Boyd went back and forth between hard labour and small...

ZEITGEIST Of iron, wood and flesh - a 4E ZEITGEIST chronicle

That's bloody fantastic! I look forward to juxtaposing Caliban with actually "soulless" automatons. It's going to be a lot of fun seeing him question what (if anything) makes him different from them.

ZEITGEIST Of iron, wood and flesh - a 4E ZEITGEIST chronicle

I seem to remember that Pemberton is replacing people with clones in the Ber aristocracy while he runs an underground mass production of weapons and golems to overtake Ber and eventually Risur. Which backstory are you referring to?

ZEITGEIST Of iron, wood and flesh - a 4E ZEITGEIST chronicle

Pretty much, yeah. 4E asks for your time but doesn't waste it. If the fights are well staged and well played and there's not too many of them, the payoff is huge and something other systems rarely can replicate. I'll be posting the last character and the chronicle of the first 2 sessions later...

ZEITGEIST Of iron, wood and flesh - a 4E ZEITGEIST chronicle

Hey! Answering your questions in order: 1. my players are old hats at pretty much every form of D&D (the group's age ranged from 35 to 45). 4E is our favourite incarnation of the system; my players have grown up on Warhammer and similar games and are really not intimidated by complex combat...

ZEITGEIST [ZEITGEIST] The Continuing Adventures of Korrigan & Co.

As a DM who just started running Zeitgeist for my group, this thread has and continues to be a gold mine. I plan to revist it as we make our way through the adventure because there's so much to learn (and enjoy!) from the tale of Korrigan and his motley crew of friends. Thanks for everything!
