    ENnie Award Winners 2012

Congratulations to all winners and nominees from RPG Resource... ... and thank you to everyone who voted me in as a Judge for next year!

You All Meet In A Bar

Er... round here (Cheshire, UK) we DO play RPGs in bars! Generally ones where someone knows the owner, or there was one group (about 3-4 tables' worth) which met in a "working men's club" which basically was a membership bar. We all joined the club, and negotiated the use of their upstairs...

Identity Loss (not the "roll for pick pockets" kind)

Round about that time I worked for a fellow whose wife was of the "All RPGs are the works of Satan" brigade. Fortunately he did not hold that opinion, although I never discussed it with his wife as he WAS very protective of her, and did not like anyone arguing with her. Guess it helped that...

So you want to be an ENnies judge...

On Honourable Mentions: I agree with Mark. Indeed, in most categories it was more of a case of "How do we get 6 products into 5 nomination slots?" than pacifying someone whose all-out favourite product didn't interest anyone else.

So you want to be an ENnies judge...

Mark & C.W. have explained the way that we went about the Product of the Year category this year... it's a kind of overarching "Which game am I actually likely to recommend you buy if you're after a new one" kind of thing.

    Drawing maps

Try some of 0one's material - the 'tile designers' listed here - RPG Resource - enable you to make miniature-sized tiles, the main drawback is that you need to work where you have access to a printer as they don't save. (Well, you can do fancy stuff with screen shots and importing into the...

Identity Loss (not the "roll for pick pockets" kind)

Very strange, as a LARPer often has a better grasp of small-group tactics than yer average man-in-the-street! (Says someone who is a veteran & has LARPed upon occasion!) I wonder if the more 'murky' ends of the IDF - or perhaps Mossad - have considered the similarities between the standard...

Identity Loss (not the "roll for pick pockets" kind)

Back in the early 1980s someone at the BBC picked up on the D&D = devil worship angle and sent a reporter from one of the religious radio shows to Game Fair, at that time the biggest national RPG convention in the UK, held at Reading University. Some bright spark at TSR remembered that I...

Announcing the 2010 ENnie Award Nominees

It's been an amazing year... so many wonderful entries to read and play... quite a struggle at times to whittle them down to the number of nomination slots available. So it's both 'Thank you' and 'Well done' to everyone who submitted product, especially the nominees but all of you... and a very...

    Published persistent mega-dungeons

The Dungeon Under the Mountain from 0one Games is massive... while it's a mapset rather than a full-fledged and populated adventure setting, assorted individual bits have been detailed in the 'Rooms & Encounters' series.

Being more descriptive as a DM

Think of a location you have visited recently. Call it up in your mind's eye. How would you describe it to somebody who'd never been there? Use of other than visual cues is essential, as others have said. Make use of places you have been to or seen on TV/Movies or read about in books. Combine...

So you want to be an ENnies judge...

You've been chatting whilst I was asleep & writing a job application.... :) Blogs & Podcasts: as a webhead and e-learning specialist in 'real life' I think they are two different - and valuable - ways of building community and sharing information... two things which this hobby is all about and...

I want to Run/Read Castle Greyhawk. Is This Possible?

Brings back memories... ... as I've actually had the pleasure of 'visiting' said castle with Gary as DM! Gen Con UK in Manchester, 2000. Unfortunately I don't remember too much of the surroundings as the combat-orientated members of the party were wiped out by a large number of goblins, and I...

    Dreseden Files RPG is Awesome

This is one game I am really looking forward to reading as soon as the ENnies judging is done... it is sitting on my hard drive awaiting my attention. I've read the books and seen the TV show - much preferred the books!

They might be movies: tense gaming moments

One of the most stressful moments personally - and which would probably have translated well onto the silver screen - involves a Spycraft game. My character - Faisal al-Fay, a rather unlikely Director of the CTU (think '24') and computer geek - had been kidnapped by some terrorists who were...

So you want to be an ENnies judge...

Excellent... lots of candidates already (including me). Read what we have to say and ask questions here or other places to help you decide for whom to vote.

So you want to be an ENnies judge...

Likewise, my hat will be in the ring again... even though I haven't quite got over the shock of having been elected last year! It is time-consuming, but not in a bad way. Given the amount of reviewing I do, anyway it has been more a change of focus, with the ENnies submissions being prioritised...

Using Ebook Readers for Gaming Books

What are the dimensions of this beastie? I use a PDA for e-books, but that's mostly novels. The RPG book PDFs live on the RPG hard drive here... (subset onto laptop for trips out to play).

    Att: WotC - Replacing PDF's

While I'd purchased all the 4e materials as PDF rather than dead tree up to the time they pulled them, the real loss is the archival material, particularly the old TSR stuff (AD&D) - they have been so long out of print that finding physical copies is hard and expensive. Even if they choose to...

    Interrupting a Funeral

Feeling lucky to have got a good vantage point from which to watch the festivities, the PCs fail to notice the poor state of repair of the rooftop balustrade on which they are leaning... until it crumbles, dropping several sizable chunks onto the procession below. This is assumed by the city...
