They're 9 and 12. Seems like they should be able to play based on everything I've read online but I guess I won't really know until I read through the rules a bit more to see how much they have to learn to be able to play.

Does anyone know what the 5e world will be like in terms of things like the Underdark, the planes, shadow fell, fey wild? Will all those exist in 5e and be similar in concept? I'm not talking about the specific mechanical aspects of a specific monster in the Underdark or Shadowfell but more...
