This has always been my issue with it. It's fine to define a word a certain way in an academic framework but trying to remove that framework and force it into the real world, especially when that word is already being used colloquially, is usually not going to work.

I've actually seen people argue that burden of proof is an outdated concept and that if you say someone isn't providing any evidence, it's on you to prove that they're not.
