Worlds of Design: “Old School” in RPGs and other Games – Part 2 and 3 Rules, Pacing, Non-RPGs, and G

I (and I am sure many other people) would love to write or read a series of positive articles about the best that the OSR has to offer. The way that people like Patrick Stuart and Scrap Princess are innovating and adding value to the rpg hobby as a whole and the common ground between old school...

    Whatever Happened to D&D's Underdog?

Leaving aside DCC, can you address the point that quite a few commentators have made about early edition low level PCs not feeling like 'fully capable heroes'? I would argue that zero level characters were on far more of a continuum with 1st level and 2nd level than maybe you are suggesting...

    Whatever Happened to D&D's Underdog?

Sorry, but I think the author is taking a fairly niche class from a single book (1st ed UA) and generalising too widely. Until 3rd edition was released in 2000, 1st level characters could, and many did, start play with a couple of (1 or 2) hit points and if you were a magic user, a single...

D&D 5E Which parts of D&D came from Tolkien?

Yes and no. Yes, Gygax and Tolkien both drew from folklore. But no in that a lot of the characteristics of folklore elements that ended up in the game have a flavour that is very much Tolkien's take, and the other variations present in folklore didn't get in. For example in a lot of folklore...

D&D 5E Which parts of D&D came from Tolkien?

I agree with Rocksome, the chatty, cunning dragons seem very Tolkien. As opposed to the other fantasy / folklore versions where they can't speak and are effectively beasts with only animal intelligence.

D&D 5E Which parts of D&D came from Tolkien?

Rangers, yes. I also think you could make a case that all the early demi-human races in D&D (elves, dwarves, halflings, maybe even half-orcs) have certain characteristics that come from Tolkien. If you look at a lot of the other books Gygax references in the back of the 1st edition AD&D DMG...

Which D&D Settings Do You Play In?

Apologies if anyone has said this already, but why isn't Primeval Thule 5e a choice? There's a bunch of us really excited by that Conan vs Cthulhu in Atlantis vibe.

    D&D 5E The Best of EN5ider?

@Josh Gentry - Love your paladin article. I've just had a new player join my online Primeval Thule campaign* who wants to play a paladin. Unfortunately Thule is an ancient rather than medieval world, where chivalry has yet to be invented. But your 'Oath of the Purge' and 'Oath of Supremacy'...

    D&D 5E The Best of EN5ider?

Humbled to see my 'Circles of Power' article doing so well. Thanks to all who voted. Love to do some more character builds in a follow-up if that's an option? Meanwhile, I should have a Guest article on Gnomestew next week, please look out for it!

Two PRIMEVAL THULE Previews In One Day? Check Out The Beastman!

These are pretty close to my homebrew versions using the Pathfinder and 13th Age stats as a base. The only real difference is the 'brutal bash'. My version of the Warchief had the goblin's bonus action to disengage. But I like this version too, looking forward to trying it out. My group had...
