D&D 5E [Let's Read] Historica Arcanum: The City of Crescent

Does the PEX system run in tandem with the XP system or does it supplant it?

Thanks for this! It is very helpful.

    D&D General Substituting 3Z7 for D20

Well, this is diverging from my original question a bit, but I think the double-or-triple 1's and 7's for crits/fumbles, being that the probabilities get close to those of D20, I'd like to try that. As for the diminishing returns on +x, my gut feeling is that I wouldn't mind and that my players...

    D&D General Substituting 3Z7 for D20

If you mean that people will hate on the "Z" notation because it decouples the number of sides on the dice while replacing it with the notion of the "max #" on the dice,... yes, I have already been incinerated with flames on that. Not on these forums, however.

    D&D General Substituting 3Z7 for D20

I'm not a math person. Can you quantify how drastic the difference is for a DC10 (or DC11) and a DC15 or DC20 under a bell curve like this?

D&D 1E Old Timers: How was D1 supposed to be run/go down?

O, if only that had been captured on video.

D&D 1E Old Timers: How was D1 supposed to be run/go down?

This seems to answer my question pretty well. I think I alluded to that idea -- the idea that TPK was more acceptable back then. What seemed unreasonable with that first D1 encounter was that was the first and explicitly unavoidable and seemed to me to be a TPK if combat was chosen. I have...

D&D 1E Old Timers: How was D1 supposed to be run/go down?

If anyone knows of stream of D1 being run as per written (1e), please do pass along. My google-fu is weak, here -- I haven't found any.

D&D 1E Old Timers: How was D1 supposed to be run/go down?

Great answers! Thanks all. The main cavern is a great example, too. Players enter the cave on the main thoroughfare and it clearly proceeds through the cavern, past another Drow checkpoint and on to further along their map. They can choose to engage the checkpoint through combat or subterfuge...

D&D 1E Old Timers: How was D1 supposed to be run/go down?

This is an ideal in DMing. It is not an ideal in module writing, which is a very different thing. A writer must decide how hard the challenge is and how many possibilities for resolution they are going to accommodate in explicit writing. All while tossing out reminders that implicitly there are...

D&D 1E Old Timers: How was D1 supposed to be run/go down?

I am aware that the old GDQ modules (and others of that primordial era) were tournament modules, that the ethos/style of play was different back then, but even taking in consideration all of the aforementioned, and taking D1 as a specific case: How was that supposed to be run/go down? I ask...
