D&D General The "Ease of Long Rests" as a metric for describing campaigns / DM styles?

I voted 4. By default, in my games, a long rest requires two uninterrupted days of respite. This decouples sleep from long resting, which is a big thing in my mind- it doesn't matter if a LR takes one day or ten, once you've made it clear that sleep =/= LR then it makes challenging party...

Check Out These T-Rex Bone Dice... But They'll Cost You!

I think the reputation that was eventually earned by artisan dice was "you'll get your dice... eventually- and they'll probably/hopefully be what you thought you'd be getting." I heard of orders being fulfilled anywhere from months to over a year after the order was placed- I imagine acquiring...

    D&D 5E (2024) WotC Announces 3rd Party Creator Partners

Nothing's going to link with DDB better than DDB. and I assume the VTT that you do use is DDB's Maps VTT? There ARE other VTTs that can hook up to and import stuff from DDB, for example there are FoundryVTT modules that do so, but if DDB is the most important thing to you... yeah you're not...

Masters of the Universe | Official Trailer

IMO it could use more practical effects over CGI, but it has all my nostalgia bones tickled. I liked it, would like it more with practical effects.

    D&D 5E (2024) Wizard vs Sorcerer (a Campaign Experience)

The most common scouts I've had at my tables, and often, are Pact of the Chain familiars via Imps. They're kind of nuts. Yes, they're not all-seeing BUT they're invisible, they can be directly guided at long distance, they have good sneaking stats, etc. Again, they're not foolproof but boy are...

Level Up (A5E) Simple question about Herbal Bitters Exploration Knack

I don't think it's a bad thing to have a haven with limits like the Ranger knack. Tying them to an area, requiring them to have some outpost to head back to when they get really messed up (needing a haven) isn't a bad thing. Yes Tiny Hut is also an answer, but I think the Ranger knack is a lot...

Check Out These T-Rex Bone Dice... But They'll Cost You!

IIRC the Artisan Dice guy has warrant out for his arrest in a state because of ignoring requests to appear for a lawsuit related to business practices...

    D&D 5E (2014) 14th level cleric

That's an interesting change. So instead of Destroy Undead, auto-killing CR# and lower, they do enough damage to destroy the low-level stuff but probably not stuff like Wights and Mummies. Basically it'll work against all undead cuz they'll take some damage, but it's actually less effective...

    D&D 5E (2014) 14th level cleric

Part of the answer here is legacy, because this is how high level clerics have worked for many editions. It's not supposed to be incredibly effective and used all the time, it's supposed to be for the rare/occasional "oh this room full of skeletons that'll bog us down? Insta-kill. Those mummies...

When Player Driven Adventures Don't Pan Out

I think this really depends on the type of players you have at your table. I have some players who're very active and will pursue leads, take hooks, pursue their own motivations that they find throughout the game. I have others that're strictly reactive and basically just enjoy the ride. Then I...

Level Up (A5E) Simple question about Herbal Bitters Exploration Knack

If they have nowhere to go and there's little danger of staying put, it doesn't seem like there's any issue hanging out all day and the ranger just making herbal bitters while everyone else hunts for food etc. Keep in mind ofc that the bitters stay potent for 24hrs, and the effect lasts 4hrs...

    D&D 5E (2024) Wizard vs Sorcerer (a Campaign Experience)

Why does a wizard using to True Strike to shine with a ranged weapon make me smile? 3e, light crossbow! 2e, whip'em with that sling!

D&D 5E (2024) Mearls has some Interesting Ideals about how to fix high level wizards.

A5E's 3pp has an Elementalist class that's pretty cool. I think it's in MoAR Complete? You can see the messy version on the fan Foundry A5E site (messy cuz it's just the info pulled from the FoundryVTT files).

D&D 5E (2024) Mearls has some Interesting Ideals about how to fix high level wizards.

Reversible spells were such a great concept. I guess it adds more text to a single spell, though? Donno, I like'em. And they could play into counterspelling instead of having just a flat "counterspell" spell  I see the appeal of the counterspell spell, it's simple, but I guess I'm not...

D&D 5E (2024) Mearls has some Interesting Ideals about how to fix high level wizards.

Based on responses in this thread, the majority of posters' experiences here don't match Mearls' experience. I don't know if his experience is based off of his own personal tables, all the playtests he's been part of, convention games, or based off of WotC's own studies on the matter. If this...

D&D General + Homebrew Brainstorm to bring back prepared Vancian Casting +

Is this a 5e-OSR homebrew ruleset? Care to share? I'm curious how you work the roll-to-cast. Aaanyway, I'm still noodling around with this whole idea- I'm torn between options 2 and 3, but I also realized that while I'm at it I'd like to address low level spell slots becoming utility-only at...

D&D 5E (2024) Mearls has some Interesting Ideals about how to fix high level wizards.

Yup. 4e and 13th Age addressed this is different ways, the 13A casters lose lower level castings as they progress and gain higher level ones. Spells can still be "upcast" by using the higher level casts.
