Exploring Forgotten Realms: Adventures in Faerûn

Whereas FR:HoF touched at least lightly on all of the known areas of Faerûn, FR:AiF delves deeper into five locations, though I question a couple of the choices. Advice for DMs But before the adventure for 1st through 3rd level characters starts, it explains what makes Faerûn different than...

A Deep Dive into Forgotten Realms: Heroes of Faerun

One of my long frustrations is that even though Faerun is huge and has room for expansion (the unexplored continents in addition to areas in the parts labeled “Beyond,” like the Lake of Steam, Evermeet, Mezro, Port Nyanzaru, and more), the overwhelming majority of products for it has been...

Review of How To Dungeon Master Parenting

The Universal DMing Challenge DMing is often likened to herding cats or managing unruly children, so a book on using DM skills to raise children makes perfect sense. That’s what Shelly Mazzanoble’s How To Dungeon Master Parenting: A Guidebook for Gamifying the Child-Rearing Quest, Leveling Up...

D&D Stranger Things Gets a Sequel – Welcome to the Hellfire Club

With the looming end of Stranger Things on the horizon, it’s not surprising that the Netflix series is collaborating again with Wizards for another boxed set -- Dungeons & Dragons Stranger Things: Welcome to The Hellfire Club. It’s even less surprising if you look up the price for some used...

Dungeons & Dragons Starter Set: Heroes on the Borderlands Review

One of the ongoing goals from the Wizards team over the past 11 years has been to make it easier for new players and DMs to get started. While the prior starter sets have clearly focused on that goal, the Dungeons & Dragons Starter Set: Heroes on the Borderlands is clearly the next step in that...

A Deep Dive in D&D: Dragon Delves

As promised, the revised editions are not required to play through Dragon Delves, though they can be used if you wish. In fact, the “Running the Adventure” section in the introduction only specifies that “you need the Fifth Edition core rulebooks” without specifying the 2014 or the 2024...

Critical Role — Vox Machina: Stories Untold

It’s hard to believe it’s been 10 years since Critical Role began on Geek & Sundry, setting actual play video on fire, and launching companies, games, an animated series, and a lot of fiction. So it’s only fitting that it’s celebrating with the anthology, Critical Role — Vox Machina: Stories...

Monsters & More: An In-Depth Review of the 2025 D&D Monster Manual

The revised and expanded Monster Manual completes the 2024 anniversary editions of the D&D core rule books. My MM preview has already provided a lot of information on the new bestiary so this review will focus on what I didn't know when I wrote the preview or things that I can elaborate on more...

Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manual 2024 Preview

The last of the 2024 expansions of the core 5E D&D rule books, the Monster Manual, is set to arrive in February. So right on time, Wizards is starting to drop information about what it contains, including a press preview, where we were able to ask some questions. Interestingly, though, this was...

In-Depth Review of the 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide

When Wizards of the Coast announced new versions of the Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, and Monster Manual for the 10th anniversary of 5E and the 50th anniversary of Dungeons & Dragons itself, it was not met with cheers. Lots of fans thought it was unnecessary, and I was skeptical...

    A Deep Dive into the 2024 D&D Player's Handbook

I doubt the gem dragons will be in the 2025 Monster Manual but I'll still be disappointed that they aren't. For me, the neutral gem dragons are sorely neglected and provide an interesting pivot point in terms of chromatic versus metallic dragons that Wizards doesn't sufficiently take advantage of.

    A Deep Dive into the 2024 D&D Player's Handbook

After all the back and forth of the public play tests and listening to the Wizards of the Coast team talk about their plans for the 2024 revised core rulebooks, I've been eager to jump into the new Player's Handbook. Originally, I even planned to go through the 2014 and 2024 books to explain all...
