    MCDM Update: The Power Roll

iirc they've said in a Q&A that they're going to spread that out across early levels, and 1st-level PCs will be simpler than the ones handed out in their first playtest.

learning today that Evil Genius Games and Evil Hat Games are separate companies, after the big thread about EGG crashing and burning.

    What makes a game OSR?

i don't want to get stuck arguing over definitions - whether a game "counts" as OSR is less important to me than what all the game's dynamics accomplish when put together. my post here is less "OSR means this and only this" and more "this is what i like about the OSR games i've played". combat...

D&D 5E Is the imbalance between classes in 5e accidental or by design?

Whether Wizards (and other full casters) seem overpowered comes down to a huge variety of factors & playstyle. Here's a few statements that, hopefully, aren't incredibly controversial. Casters and martials mostly occupy different niches. Most casual players won't notice much of an imbalance, if...

Playtest (A5E) Level Up Playtest Document #15: Herald

tbh, they're kind of both right. paladins are way stronger than other 5e martials, but that doesn't mean they're badly designed - it's just that other martials should be brought up to their level.

Playtest (A5E) Level Up Playtest: Ranger v2

That's definitely preferable, and it'll be nice to have a defined ruleset for exploration when it's finished. Do you plan to maybe revise familiar terrain when the exploration ruleset is finished? As it stands, it's just 5e's version copied word-for-word, which I can't imagine could be expected...

Playtest (A5E) Level Up Playtest: Ranger v2

That's understandable. Does make it hard to judge abilities that directly reference something that isn't out yet, though.

Playtest (A5E) Level Up Playtest: Ranger v2

This definitely seems like an improvement over the previous packet, mostly due to no longer requiring concentration on a core class feature. I particularly don't like natural explorer and favored enemy being here, though. Especially since they seem to be copied exactly from the 5e PHB, with the...

Playtest (A5E) Level Up Playtest Document #7: Ranger

I get that, but ranger is by far the most complained about thing in 5e, and for good reason. Plus, if they're just publishing the same thing but with more depth, why remove the spells? Doesn't that signify they're willing to go in a different direction with the class, and the game as a whole? I...

Playtest (A5E) Level Up Playtest Document #7: Ranger

Looking over the whole class, it feels like they took 5e's PHB Ranger, ripped out the spellcasting, and then tried to make up for the loss of spellcasting by buffing everything else the class has. It absolutely baffles me that natural explorer/favored enemy are here, almost entirely unchanged...

Playtest (A5E) Level Up Playtest Document #7: Ranger

But those classes all play different. You couldn't make sneak attack, or divine smite, or rage, or stunning strike just a subclass feature. It's so weird to me that some people think there should be, like, three classes and everything else should just be a subclass.
