    AI/LLMs Plagiarism vs. Inspiration

I steal something and pretend I invented it = inspiration. Someone is inspired by something I did and puts its own twist on it, even crediting me for the inspiration = theft.

D&D General Art of Clyde Caldwell Kickstarter

Ouch! Makes sense seeing how just the base price of this book is already quite steep.

D&D General Art of Clyde Caldwell Kickstarter

Randomly stumbled across this Kickstarter last night. I'm very happy with my copy of Art & Arcana and Caldwell is one of the greats. So I'm thinking I'll be backing this.

D&D General Forgotten Realms cover to "Guide to the Dalelands" revealed, book delayed

It's a shame WOTC stopped doing quality hand-painted cover art like during the Basic/AD&D days with Elmore, Easley, Caldwell etc. I'm sure there are talented artists around who could do it, so it must be a case of wanting to saving money or time.

Shadowdark Alternate Shadowdark Paladin: Looking for Ideas

I think that's a Leper ability in Darkest Dungeon.

Shadowdark Alternate Shadowdark Paladin: Looking for Ideas

The Crusader from Darkest Dungeon could be an inspiration.

OSR OSR Layout and Design Thread

For electronic I prefer a .txt file with all text in one single line, long line. For print I prefer braille (in Klingon, obviously).

    Why I Hate Skills

In Pathfinder 2E, for example, if you use Recall Knowledge in a combat to learn something about a monster and critically fail. You learn something incorrect. But if you as a player see that you rolled low, you now possess meta-game knowledge you should not have. And if you roll high, you know...

OSR OSR Layout and Design Thread

Justified text can look great (see the D&D 3rd edition books as an example), but it can be a pain to work with and isn't suitable in every case. I tend to write in smaller blocks of text that isn't conducive to it, and don't like having to spend time working the text when the spacing gets out of...

    Why I Hate Skills

It's Castles & Crusades that has the SIEGE engine. The way it works is that when you make an attribute (ability score) check, you roll 1d20 + attribute bonus + level to beat a base DC of 18. But if the attribute is a prime attribute for you, the base DC is only 12. The GM can modify the DC up...

    Why I Hate Skills

I know some use saving throws in B/X and BECMI D&D as resolution mechanics. For example, if you try something dexterous or agile, you save vs. breath weapon to succeed. The point of doing this instead of for example, rolling under your ability score (which other DMs use, and is how the optional...

    Why I Hate Skills

I play in dungeon turns behind the screen, when the party is exploring a dungeon or dungeon-like environment, but my players are not aware of it directly. The players are aware that the longer time they spend at a location, the more wandering monster encounters they might have, however. Working...

D&D General Favorite Underrated D&D Monsters for Low-Level Encounters

Kobolds because they are small and can thus live in tunnels too small for medium-sized PCs to stand up, because you can come up with all sorts of devious traps. You can mix them up with dangerous trained animals or larger monsters. Hobgoblins because of their militaristic nature. So they can...

    Why I Hate Skills

I suspect you are primed for role-playing if you are a critter, and primed for roll-playing if you solely know D&D from BG3.

    Why I Hate Skills

I know Pathfinder 2E has that, but it's still only one of those workarounds that are open to scenarios where it doesn't make sense. For example, first one player wants to attempt, and the other player doesn't offer to aid, or isn't able to, as he is in another room. Then after this first attempt...

    Why I Hate Skills

We're also compounding the issue with the "piling on" of rolls, which I'm not sure is necessarily an issue with skills, although perhaps they make it more obvious. I think it's a fair ruling to say that if the high Int guy trained in the skill can't do it, then others can't, but you still run...

    Why I Hate Skills

If you don't want your door to be picked or broken down, you can put in an alternative type of "lock." Like having slots shaped so only certain items held by someone elsewhere in the dungeon, or a lever in a separate location operating it. I think a good example of OSR design is that of an...

    Why I Hate Skills

I think when OSR-style games or gamers refer to "player skill" they mean the player's abilities to think of solutions to obstacles in the game world, rather than physical skills, like real-life ability to pick a lock. That's why attacks are resolved by dice rolling but tactical decisions are...
