D&D 1E Should Gold Dragons always be LG and Black Dragons always be CE?

sometimes, yes. A couple I change the baseline for/permanently, one being the black dragon you mention. 1e MM " They tend towards the mid point between law and chaos in their evil." I make them out as being Neutral Evil

    Dragon Reflections #64

ok, the assassin article is ok, for what it is, but naw, I came up with as much or better w/o it. The specific guild rules/example are not at all my cup of tea/a bit silly

    Dragon Reflections #64

I do not think I'd call it a substantial issue, as it lacks a stand out article. It was fine at the time, but it's not one I visit anymore. The weapons, & powerful angelic monsters do deserve note, and the bits on Greyhawk/Raxivort are of solid historical note though. I've run assassin/guild...

    Dragon Reflections #63

"A shifty character for your campaign" by Tom Armstrong and Roger Moore introduces the Bandit NPC class. The result is like a fighter/thief with a few of the ranger's outdoor skills thrown in. However, it's not very interesting compared to some of the NPC classes in previous issues." many...

    D&D 2E Boxing footwork and 2nd Ed dex/balance

Indeed, we could, and many old school games did. It was common to joke about silly D&D and strength helping one land a hit (& the argument is always "armor, toughness, etc is overcome). Even other old TSR games would use "dexterity" for modifying chances to hit in melee combat, and not just...

    D&D 3E/3.5 BoVD Sadism Spell

They don't, no, but the circumstances of taking damage & dishing out damage are a bit different & by no means automatic. one certainly might need their BBG to say, dispel, cast a protection or movement effect, or heck, even a non damaging attack. You won't get either effect some rounds

    D&D 3E/3.5 BoVD Sadism Spell

option 2 it's got some issues, sure, especially compared to masochism, (why is everything italics now?) but (finally) unless you are in 3.5e it's probably fine. Otherwise place some caps (+10 for 100+ seems good) & make sure any item of it has some evil tags/issues Used by a high level big bad...
