D&D General Should players be aware of their own high and low rolls?

Yeah I mean, if I'm playing at this table and we fight the Quantum Metagame Troll and I declare that I want to huck a fireball at it, and this fireball hucking is declared by the DM as Metagame Cheating, what.... happens? Assume it's my first strike in Metagame Cheating. Does the fireball still...

Pathfinder 2E A quick note on calculating XP

Wait, what? Are you normally supposed to divide the Xp between the party? I figured if it was a 100xp encounter, everyone just gets 100 XP?

D&D 5E How Long Does it Take to Reach 20th Level: A Brief Explanation

Ah ok, I looked at page 261 (you got me to read the DMG, Snarf) and yeah it is the specific "Session Based Advancement" rules, not XP rules. Interesting! So you flat just level based on how many sessions you play. Though considering it says this I feel like we're back to square one 🙃

D&D 5E How Long Does it Take to Reach 20th Level: A Brief Explanation

Well now I'm curious, this is still using the XP tables for level ups correct? Not milestones? How long then is an average combat supposed to last at the table?

D&D General Should players be aware of their own high and low rolls?

So yeah my bulleted list is the best method i've found from that. If they don't see the dice they can't get hit with Forbidden Knowledge. Pathfinder 2 has a bunch of actions explicitly tagged as Secret even, so other games are already making it stock-standard instead of just DMG advice.

D&D 5E How Long Does it Take to Reach 20th Level: A Brief Explanation

10,560 minutes, 10,560 moments oh dear, 10,560 minutes, How do you campaign, Campaign for a year? In combats, In Dex-saves, in rations, in chopped up goblins In hexes, in point crawls, in in-jokes, in even more combat In 10,560 minutes how do you measure a year in the life?

D&D General Should players be aware of their own high and low rolls?

Ok cool. Correct me if I'm wrong, you want player advice on how you, as a player, can avoid the temptation of Forbidden Knowledge. Yes I'm being a bit cheeky, hopefully it lightens the mood. Well, again, assuming you want to avoid being a jerk and aren't acquiring Forbidden Knowledge for...

D&D General Should players be aware of their own high and low rolls?

Rereading your Op I see you're more asking as a player than a DM, so when I do play, which isn't often, I roll (heh) with it. I rolled a nat one on this diplomacy? Let me play that out. It's an opportunity for some good comedy, honestly. I rolled low on the stealth check? Well, I wait for the Dm...

D&D General Should players be aware of their own high and low rolls?

I guess I just disagree that metagaming is the problem there. Again, the problem is "adversarial mindset", the vector is metagaming. You can ban metagaming but that does nothing to disabuse the adversarial mindset. Also, just, my life experience has been mostly that metagaming just happens and...

Sorry, I'm still in therapy for my 2010 edition war PTSD

D&D General Should players be aware of their own high and low rolls?

By good faith I mean "not intentionally ruining the game for everyone else". If any metagaming at all ruins the game for you, and they know that, then yeah they're playing in bad faith. I also just think never metagaming is kind of an impossible standard and as a DM I just let it go if you...

D&D General Should players be aware of their own high and low rolls?

This exactly. If a player is playing the game in good faith it shouldn't matter if they're metagaming or not. If you spoil the movie we're watching, it doesn't matter if you've seen the movie before or not, your specific behavior has ruined the experience. Also, specifically to RPGs, it's...

D&D General Should players be aware of their own high and low rolls?

This whole video game analogy is kinda bunk from the start because, unless you're doing an old school con tournament, D&D isn't a 1 vs all competitive game? Maybe use Overcooked! or World of Warcraft raids or something. Also 'metagaming is an unfair advantage'. Unfair for who, advantage against...

D&D 5E Is the Default Playstyle of 5E "Monty Haul?"

So after 10 pages of people getting tripped in the semantics of incorrect gamer slang and the same "but CAN you retreat tho?" argument that's as old as usenet, we get to the actual issue. So yeah, 5e is explicitly designed around 5-8 'war of attrition' fights, per day with 2 short rests. Or...

    Armor as Damage Reduction

Worlds Without Number is also worth looking at, it rolls 'armor as miss', 'armor as DR' and "damage on a miss" all into one; Shock Damage. So Shock Damage is an abstract of the fatigue of being in combat. Every melee weapon is rated as having some amount of shock damage (usually 1 to 3), and...

D&D General D&D is like candy corn

Lawful Neutral. Like the article you posted in the op says, its fine. Its a candy. I like it ok, some people don't, a lot of people are very invested in performatively hating it (countdown to someone saying its Chaotic Evil). But more importantly, its always here. Every Halloween, it shows up. I...
