Well, I only ever fill up the tank up to $20 USD anyway, so none of these price hikes have any impact on me.

IMHO, the prices that Games Workshop has for any single product whatsoever - miniatures, rulebooks or 'codexes', boxed sets etc. - are priced at the high-end of the market, not the 'beginner-looking-to-try-out-a-game-and-see-if-I-like-it' price range.

If - as some people claim - 'Lost Mine of Phandalver' is somehow the best 'adventure' WotC has ever produced, then the rest must be really really crappy. I played through the module, and was not impressed.

Not in my personal experience, no. For example, to me, 'Lost Mine of Phandalver' was a solid experience of how the game actually works 'post-starter-set', without any changes to the actual game-play experience. Your experience may have been different though.

At best, it's a 'gateway product', not showing the actual game but instead being in the space between an ordinary board game and an actual TTRPG.

I'm slightly confused. With this starter-set, it looks like they are trying to turn D&D into a boardgame-like thing, that doesn't really translate to how most people are currently playing TTRPG's, including but mot limited to D&D ? And setting up wrong expectations about how the potential buyers...
