"You meet a mysterious stranger in a tavern." Origins?

You'll need to figure out what a trope is and get back to me before we start discussing the effects of mass media on the contemporary conception of historical "truth". It gets a bit complicated. As I say, I think there's more to this than you are considering, and I think you could learn some...

"You meet a mysterious stranger in a tavern." Origins?

Things certainly do happen at times, in places. There's more to it than that in our postmodern world, saturated in mass media and reconstructed historical/fantasy referants. If you don't agree or don't want to engage with that line of thought, that's ok.

"You meet a mysterious stranger in a tavern." Origins?

While the trope as imagined in fiction may be some reflection of reality somewhere down the line, we are discussing the origin of OP's trope as stated: "You meet a mysterious stranger in a tavern." Whether pubs existed and they had a historical social function different from what we might expect...

"You meet a mysterious stranger in a tavern." Origins?

A lot of replies concern some historical version of a pub, which is interesting, but I think it's clear that the origin of the trope "you meet a mysterious stranger at an inn" seen in RPGs today is a combination the moment in Lord of the Rings (which itself has historically-informed precedents...

Smart! I like to think the sort of concentric waves of levelled content approach is a different kind of abstraction which guides play, in the same vein as my suggestion. D&D General Lego Sandbox vs Open Sandbox (and other sandbox discussion)

Without, uh.. de-railing this too much further, "sandbox" could be an offensive and derogatory term too, in that it is also broadly metaphorical and reliant on the contextual language surrounding it for definition. Maybe it would be less derogatory and offensive if we just didn't use any words...

Free League forcing Alchemy VTT to remove PDFs - Anti-consumer behaviour?

Yeah they are no longer providing access to the PDFs after the specified date. I don't expect Pinkertons to turn up demanding my HDD.......right? 😂 Amazing that the thought even occurs with a company like Free League who otherwise seem so right on, how silly. If they have a problem with the PDF...

Free League forcing Alchemy VTT to remove PDFs - Anti-consumer behaviour?

100%. Seems like a communication error or some such somewhere between Alchemy and Free League is now their customers' problem. Bad business, that.

Free League forcing Alchemy VTT to remove PDFs - Anti-consumer behaviour?

Hey all. I recently purchased a bundle of Free League games on Alchemy VTT. Pretty awesome, was looking forward to playing a bunch of sweet Swedish-published games. It included access to a bunch of games via the Alchemy platform and the pdf downloadable for each. All good. Unfortunately, I've...
