Multiple RPGs like DCC and Knave have mechanics for patrons, but I haven't personally run across play reports of patrons playing a big part of a campaign. Whether formalized with mechanics or not, has anyone had a good time with patrons? Care to share what made them work for your game?

One way to make this work is to vary the size of the dungeons available. One megadungeon, a few multi-level dungeons, and a handful of one-page dungeons makes for a lot of choice but a lot less prep for a DM compared to just prepping three whole megadungeons.

I agree. I've almost exclusively both played and run games online since college and it works… but it is more fun in person.
