OSR Games that really use combat as a fail state?

It always felt like White Wolf's, Changeling the higher end abilities were mostly about social dominance. Seemed like gunfights were bad news, since any dumbo with a firearm could lethal you pretty easily

    D&D 5E (2014) Building a Better Ankheg

I've given some of my monsters "cunning action" to work the ambush then retreat angle. It worked decently...the movement speed came into effect in that battle due to deciding if the monsters had the movement to reach the tall grass and bonus action hide... or if they had to use bonus action to...

New Unearthed Arcana Brings Back Five Subclasses

Yes! Non-suck battle-rager!! Agreed. It wouldn't have to be ALL about dwarves either.. though probably good to say the origins of the subclass lies with the little hairy-folk still

New Unearthed Arcana Brings Back Five Subclasses

Seems like a CHA based monk is missed opportunity as of yet. So a monk subclass (gladiator-like, luchador, WWE, Greco-roman). That transcends cultural pigeon-holing due to the widespread nature of the source trope. Bonesaw is Reeeady! And you wouldn't need to be that wisdomtastic monk... no...

D&D General Has Tiny Hut actually affected your game? Or has it otherwise mattered?

On the offensive front though, if it is not an energy blast... but just "solid energy" similar to shadow crafting... then it should just emulate what solid trauma you are imposing... ie. B/P/S. As someone previously articulated better

D&D General Has Tiny Hut actually affected your game? Or has it otherwise mattered?

I can't wait for a bunch of Troglodytes to stumble upon the nondescript dome and start worshipping. Hail dome-God!!!

D&D General Has Tiny Hut actually affected your game? Or has it otherwise mattered?

To me, wasting spell slots on all this ticky-tacky pre-scouting conditions is a risky proposition... It is not "intelligence" of the monsters you should be concerned about as much as the unpredictability. I guess you can have players that love their Rube Goldberg setups though. The spell has...

D&D General Has Tiny Hut actually affected your game? Or has it otherwise mattered?

"Countermeasures" in my game were just siege conditions.... undead gathering up, not much to do with intelligence there, just shambling around sensing sweet juicy lifeforce. It was kind of a hint, hint, how much worse do you want this to get? Do you want to lose your evasion spells first thing...

D&D General Has Tiny Hut actually affected your game? Or has it otherwise mattered?

It has meant a bit in my campaign, if you sleep on the Steppes without shelter, it is challenging to ever wake again. So, when the party lost their caravan, that spell saved som 🥓. Otherwise, I am a big fan of handing out exhaustion, a great punishment mechanic

D&D General Has Tiny Hut actually affected your game? Or has it otherwise mattered?

I have had enemies not like "making a house in MY house". I've had stupid zombie types and unsleeping undead just keep building up seige numbers.

D&D 5E (2014) [Let's Read] Devabhumi: Heroic Indian Fantasy Setting for 5e and Pathfinder

I would so love to play a PC under a DM with a more Easterly mythology perspective. Oh the fun we would have as I stumbled my character into a trope-blend that DM could adapt into their material 😀

    D&D 5E (2024) Better Monster Design. 6E/BG3 Ideas

Not bad. I love bringing exhaustion into this. Exhaustion on strike (no saving throw), with tiers of drain... by this I mean +1 drain caps it off at 1 exhaustion, +3 caps it off at 3 levels exhaustion, all the way up to a max drain +6 lethal. The only thing I hate with that is how it could be...

D&D General Has Tiny Hut actually affected your game? Or has it otherwise mattered?

Long rests have been so hard to come by in my campaign. It has been good for them... particularly because the wizard has a huge backlog of craft and arcana/identify activity... Though it may lead to TPK if they feel overly safe and decide to use it while there is any evidence of a growing undead...

    D&D 5E (2024) Rank 5e skills from most useful (1) to least useful (18)

Moreso than the slight differences in skill, the most important reason to not consolidate similar skills is the limitation to closing off some role or character creation aspect-know-it-all wizard shouldn't have to be MAD to know it all If Im playing my Jaws PC. I want to play Quint OR Hooper...

    D&D 5E (2024) Rank 5e skills from most useful (1) to least useful (18)

There is a good bit of overlap, probably d/t some role overlap between being a bit of a nature themed INT character vs a more intuitive WIS character. Neither should be a fish out of water in nature situations - so give an option to either character. I like to focus heavily on role when it...

Those are terrain hazards... seems different than identifying a species. A Survival roll to me, would be an act of foraging. Good survival would probably to find some option entirely better than the shroom in the first place. You could certainly find shrooms and wisdom out that they MAY be...

I'm a big fan of intimidate, I will try it out, sacrificing an action after an example is made of some hapless opponent. Sometimes the DM is fine with that and it is super fun. Also have used it to terrify superstitious tribes before... Ewoks

I use investigate differently than this I think... that's ok. Perception is generalized scene info to me. But actually intuiting anything from the descriptors is investigate. So, noticing the immaculate boots on a scorched scene is Perception. Investigating would be to actually figure out that...

    D&D 5E (2024) Rank 5e skills from most useful (1) to least useful (18)

It depends if everyone in your party is into playing their specific role. I've played plenty of fighters that brazenly light their torch and let other people try to gather the info... perception meant very little to those. I've done very well with athletics and stealth
