D&D General Words which replaced "race" in fantasy games

I think this also depends on how one views the origin of the different .... species. In my world, the deities are supposedly the creators of each; so the dwerves have a goddess/god; the urks a goddess/god, the gnomes a goddess/god, the elves a goddess/god and the humans ... well, they're sorta...

D&D 5E (2024) DMG 2024: Is The Sandbox Campaign Dead?

You can't monetized sandbox. D&D has become a business, which is why its recent products are .... well, met with mixed reaction among us old farts. Too many think "sandbox" = "buncha random naughty word," but the reality is that "sandbox" = "fluid", which requires a DM who has the time to prep a...

D&D 5E (2024) New Campaign: game day setup

I went old skul (and then modified things). I went with a raised chalkboard, but.... I have a large monitor facing player-ward. I can drop appropriate scenery there, or "here's the letter you found on the dead rogue's body."

D&D General Words which replaced "race" in fantasy games

I think the terms should be species/race/culture in descending order. If the creatures cannot interbreed, they should be considered separate species. My Dwerves can't interbreed. Neither can my Urks. Both are seperate species from humans and elves. Humans have races with cultures. Elves have two...

    D&D General D&D Variants Forum

Eeh, I'm gonna push back on that. I've got a 2d10 combat mechanic, but it's essentially a THAC0-adjacent approach, with AC starting at 0. Got D&D classes, D&D xp, even D&D spell levels (albeit spell point based.) So, in short, I'm gonna disagree. Shocking thing for the Interwebs, but there you...

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

Who gives a royal fig about the art? The game isn't played by flipping through the monster manual for pictures... Egad, that's petty. Couple of background comments: I came to the game in the eighties, exposed to a heavy homebrew of 1e with 2e infusions. The game (RAW) has changed a lot. I dunno...

OD&D Why is AC 2 the best armor class?

I have AC starting at zero and ascending logically. Math works with a 2d10 to hit, Roll must >=10-F+AC. So the math explains diddly. Descending AC never made a lick of sense.

    OSR Healing tweak - proportionality

I, too, wanted to get a bit more of that feel .... I may have gone a bit more into rapid gaining of hit points, however. Long rest: A long rest is defined as eight hours time, during which three quarters of (ie: six hours minimum) must be spent being sedentary. After such a time, a being will...

Homebrew Toying with initiative - phased and segments

Don't like this - it doesn't allow for adapting to circumstances that develop.

    OSR Healing tweak - proportionality

It's basically an entire game system, but the attachments seem to work fixed armour class so unarmoured is 0, and AC increases from there; hit matrix is Hit >=10-F+AC did away with d20 rolls (now 2d10 for rolls to hit, 5d6 under a stat [modified by spell level of caster] for saves, 4d6 for...

OD&D Why is AC 2 the best armor class?

When I rebooted, I had no armour at zero. Boiled leather at 3. Mail at 5. Shields adds 2. Easy to do the combat stuff as well.

    Shadowdark July homebrew challenge: Summer!

My next adventure might be an interesting one. An oracle - new to the job - hires an adventuring guild to solve a crime. The crime? The Oracle has predicted her own kidnapping.

    OSR Healing tweak - proportionality

This is my homebrew, because 5e made things so that people just long rest and poof and I wanted gritty. Body points: Body points are a function of a creature’s species more than anything else. To put in blunt terms, small creatures are generally more fragile than large ones. For player...
