Next Deities & Demigods (now with poll!)

I vote for Cthulu and other gods of the Far Realm. The more insanity/chaos/madness the better.

    C&C: Why Different Challenge Bases?

I think the real reason they have a base 12 for primary attributes and 18 for non-primary attributes instead of a more simple +5 to primary attributes is because you do not get that +5 attribute bonus on all rolls. If the combat roll and all other NON-skill rolls were AttributeModifier...

D&D 4E [4e] Wizard as good as a Fighter in Standard Melee

I like that aspect of 4E. RM also has it as a mechanic for spell casters and I very much liked it in that as well. Plus RM also had criticals for spells; there was some nasty stuff that could happen on criticals.

D&D 4E [4e] Wizard as good as a Fighter in Standard Melee

Your thought triggered a memory of the age-old controversy: Who would win, a 20th level paladin or a 20th level wizard? As usual, no one could agree, although I think the underlying answer was: Whoever was able to attack first would win. :)

D&D 4E [4e] Wizard as good as a Fighter in Standard Melee

All good points. I do realize my OP was an unlikely case to happen, but just wanted to point out the difference between the d20+ATT+LVl/2 mechanic. However, after much abashing (one poster even mentioning a rubber hose), I think I more clearly see the fault with my original post. While many...

D&D 4E [4e] Wizard as good as a Fighter in Standard Melee

I agree with your second statement, but not the first in which anyone can get these -- see below. Also, I was thinking about this more in terms of how the game was designed. Since I'm looking to design YetAnotherRPGSystem, I've been looking over many that are out there and this struck me as a...

D&D 4E [4e] Wizard as good as a Fighter in Standard Melee

Just checking to see if this is correct, because it seems a little strange to me. In 4e, take a wizard and fighter using the same melee weapon (staff, dagger, etc) in which both are proficient, and happen to have the same strength (i.e. the fighter didn't really go out to max his STR and the...

    Random Ideas

Interesting idea of reducing the AC as the battle progresses. Maybe, tie a negative AC modifier to a PC's "Combat/Fatigue" points (or just plain HPs). As the PC/Monster is hit (and performs actions that use Combat/Fatigue points if using those), then the AC will get lower. Perhaps a -2 at...

    Random Ideas

I was just thinking about your idea of giving a negative bonus to Untrained, but in the context of unifying DC values. In 4e, we have Ability checks which are d20 + stat bonus, and Skill checks which are d20 + stat bonus + skill bonus (I'm leaving out the 1/2 level modifier which only...

    Random Ideas

I was reading a thread over on the WOTC forums and a couple people were talking about PC Stats having to much influence on the game. This got me to thinking if there are other ways of using stats or stat bonuses. Now, I do think that a high STR should grant some bonus to melee attacks, or a...

Hello and Welcome to Towards 5E

I like the +1/2 per level as well. Maybe we can limit the level bonuses to a set of core class/profession skills only. All the other secondary skills only carry the +5 bonus (or whatever) unless the PC 'buys' additional bonuses through feats or whatnot. I don't have the 3.5 rule set, but...

Sacred Cows - thinning the herd

Thanks for BAB. Also, I now see what people are saying with the to-hit roll. I assume you wouldn't be using your weapon ToHit values, but I'm not sure what ToHit value a PC would use? Hand to hand doesn't seem quite right, as I probably suck at hand-to-hand combat, but I'm pretty sure I could...

Hello and Welcome to Towards 5E

I think your on to something here. Define what a master can accomplish, what his bonus would be, and you have a top most cap for the system. If +20 is master level, then that could effectively give us 20+ levels for PCs (if using +1/2 per level + other bonuses & items, or lower levels if using...

Sacred Cows - thinning the herd

    - I like what people have said about levels. In 4e I don't like getting a +1/2 for everything. I think it should be something more like +1/2 only on skills specific to your Class (or profession). Perhaps, a feat (or some mechanic) can allow a PC to bring other skills into their set of Class...

Making Spellcasting and the Arcane Work

A couple notes after reading the above: - I kind of like the wizard having to roll a to hit for attack spells like in 4e, which works for Magic Missile, Acid Arrow, and such. A more reflexive target is harder to hit. It means less that AOE spells, though and I'm not pushing this or anything...

I like this as well. If the magical attack (from fire, cold, etc.) is doing physical damage, then DR should apply. Where I don't think it would apply is for something like Drain Life or a similar magical attack.

Some more food for thought to get people's creative juices going -- again, this might be similar to other systems or not. Random Ideas

Here's a couple ideas that I noted from another 5E thread (can't remember if from a WOTC forum or EnWorld forum). Coincidentally, it also had 5E in the thread title. - In stead of having an AC stat, just use Reflex, Fortitude, and Will. Attacks going against AC would be redirected against...

Though we could have a thread where people can place 5E system ideas that don't yet have a thread or that maybe don't even need their own thread. If an idea blossoms, then we can later move it into it's own thread for further discussion.

    Making Hit Points Work

My take on this ( and it's certainly not an original idea), is that normal damage takes away from Combat/Fatigue/Stun points first. When these are gone, then damage takes away from HP/Body points. Also, critical hits bypass Combat/Fatigue/Stun points and directly damage HP/Body points. To...
